    Buzzing Issues

    Hi,

I have recently purchased a 1999 V8 Discovery ES without ACE and just fixing issues. For the moment the three amigos have gone packing, and I still need to sort out the locks which will likely involve changing the door latch mechanisms in the passenger side doors and tailgate. Now, however, there are two new issues:

    1: Ignition Buzzing

When I turn the ignition on there is a rough buzzing sound coming from the right hand side of the ignition. It stays on constantly, and I even think it does so when the engine is on. Any ideas what it could be? I can add a video of this tomorrow if that helps.

    2: Top of Engine

I checked under the hood and couldn't really hear the ignition buzzing issue. Another buzz though is what looks like a cylindrical unit that sits at the top of the engine in connection with the air intake. Is it normal for this unit to buzz continuously with the ignition turned to the 2 position? Below is a picture of what I mean:

The ignition buzzing is the cabin temperature sensor. It is easy enough to access from behind and probably just needs a clean and a tiny bit of lube. You want to be careful as it is delicate and a new one costs $178. If you do a search there is a post with photos detailing the process.

Thanks for getting back to me. For that one, do you think a can of contact cleaner would do if I sprayed it through the vent?

No. you will find it full of fluff.
You need to get a vacuum and get as much out as possible , then carefully dig out the remainder. AFAIR , you can take the little Grille off and the fluff will be behind it as it seems to pull in from the front ie from the driver.

It removes with two screws from behind, the top one is difficult to get to but doable.

Awesome, thanks for that. Any idea regarding the buzz in the engine? I provided a diagram pointing to the unit below.

Pull the fan out, pull it apart and stick some grease on the ends of the pin that locates the blade.

The intake part is the idle air control valve. Not sure how it operates so hard to say why it might buzz. Manual says it's "rotary valve" so I assume it has an electric motor that winds the valve open and closed.

It's a stepper motor which moves a sleeve valve in a rotary motion to close off or open up .
The part is the same as a BMW .
It may be stuck with carbon so perhaps pull it off and clean it.
You don't hear of these failing much at all. I have one from a Thor manifold I bought long ago. PM if you want to buy.

Thanks again. I'll have a look at both of these tomorrow. Hopefully more off the list.
