LRA 'recovery' points bought and fitted.

Following on from this thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ts-wanted.html which due to no responses from people that had actually bought the LRA 'Recovery' points ( Recovery Gear bottom of page) I thought I'd admit to buy and fitting them

First thing they are not the same as the ones shown in the pictures on the LRA site, design has been simplified. The main bracket is now plain 20mm thick steel, no thin plate with bent edges to improve strenght.

The total weight, including the supplied hooks, for the pair was 7.7Kg. They do not come with and hardware for fixing to the chassis rails (Hook hardware IS included, 8.8 class). No big drama, just bought 4 x M10 1.5 140mm class 8.8 bolts, new spring washers and for overkill 4 x M10 locking nuts.

I mounted the plate steel main points to the inside of the chassis legs, with the hooks mounted on the 'outside' of the plate steel.

I was able to keep the wombat bar, but had to spin it 180 so the leftside is now on the right & vice versa. I had to introduce Mr Hammer to the wombat bar to 'dent' it so that the main plate would 'fit' into the dent. The wombat bar now sits slightly higher due to the swept back fitting now. Also gave the wombat bar a lick of paint.

Forgot to take pictures of the points before fitting, but you get the idea

They look exactly like the ones I am about to fit, however you mention overkill on 10mm nuts. I would call it underkill.

I was concerned about such small bolt sizes. Mine has 10mm on one side and 11mm on the other. I rang my supplier today to ask if they could be drilled to take half inch bolts and he said this is what they do.

I have two options in mind.

Option one. Make a thick spacer to fill the gap in the bends of the wombat bar and get longer bolts

Option two. Cut the wombat bar and lengthen it so that it bolts on the outside of the recovery points.

Any input on these options from any engineering back grounded members(and any one else as well) would be appreciated.

    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

The overkill bit was regarding using spring washers and locking nuts.

I am aware of this. I was pointing out (in a bit of a sarcastic manner) that I don't think 10mm bolts are big enough, which is why I am going to use half inch bolts, to suite the hole size in the plate.

I upgraded mine to 12mm bolts. Think there the next rating higher for shear also.
Not overly happy with how they sit against the crush tube of the arb bullbar.

Just bought some. Have not arrived yet, in the mail.

    Will let you know.

    Will supply pics when installed.

BTW: Have an ARB bar on the front. Interesting to see how they fit.
