Having gone black, I will never go back!![]()
I have ordered timing pins from the UK and will have to wait . They should arrive by 23 this month.
I will have to learn to post pics, but it does look really good and you don"t get any reflected light off the lining in front of the visors. I didn't know I was getting reflection before I changed to black but it does make a hell of an improvement.
Only a newbie here, and had my disco 2 for just over a week. Long list of to do's but after reading this thread and then dooing some reserach in various forums i decided to begin the headliner repair today.
I rang a few motor trimmers this week in Brisbane and best quote to re-line it wat $450. They told me for that price the material would have a join in it as standard foam backed headliner material wasnt wide enought for a discovery.
I bought the car as a project as i enjoy some garage time and have restored a few cars over the last few years. So with that in mind i decided to do the headliner myself.
After a lot of research, Ive opted to paint the fibreglass plannel rather than re-line it so i have a permanenet fix. A lot of talk about this on various forums of paint vs replacing the cloth trim, but as the headliner card in the disco is fibreglass rather than cardboard style, if copes with being painted.
So today i took my time, removed most of the interior trim and pulled the headliner card out.
Lots of fiddly bits to pull out, but if you take your time and have the proper tools (like a trim remover kit) its not that hard.
After it was removed, the material just fell off, and i used a hard bristled brush and scrubbed all the foam and glue off. Was a lot easier than i expected.
Next i just used a acrylic primer (bought a 1 litre tin from supercrap), and applied using a small roller and a brush for the corners. Put a very thick coat on and it came up pretty well.
Once that was dry, i gave it a good vaccum as the primer seems to go a bit dusty when it drys, and then i applied a final topcoat.
After a tip on another forum, i bought 2 cans of grey stoneguard paint. It leavs a bit of a textured finish and drys a bit like a rubber surfuce thats can cope with flex.
Came up pretty good. Will be a bit of a contrast to the fittings, but thats what i wanted after seeing photos of someone elses truck.
Drying in the garage now, re install tomorrow. Heres a few pics. ....

Looks good. This is one of the jobs I still need to tackle.
Did you spray the stoneguard on or paint it on with a roller?
Hi Mundy
AA Motor Trimmers, 26 Cowper St Granville. They did mine a few years back -it lasting well and looks as good as new still. Its the same place Ron and a number of others have mentioned over the years. From memory it was about $140, if you drop it off early its done by late afternoon. It was money well spent![]()
Installed the newly painted headliner today. Pretty happy with the finish. I like the contrast of colours and knowing ill never have to do it again is good. Another added bonus was the fact that all the trim i pulled down, got a good clean, and after reassembly and a test drive, lots the the squeaks and rattles have dissapeard - tightening up all the fittings had an added bonus. Heres some pics of the finished job ....

Another idea if anyone was considering painting like CaptainJack has done, is to get a litre (or thereabouts) of acrylic paint custom mixed to to colour of the beigey interior panels. most places that mix paint should be able to colour match, and, I assume, that the stoneguard could be painted straight over?
