Question Modded TD5 - manual vs auto

Anyone had the luxury of comparing a modified TD5 motor in both manual and automatic transmission? I have been contemplating the idea of converting my D2a TD5 (remap, intercooler, VNT, exhaust) from automatic to manual...

    Hey mate

I'd be really keen to see how yr vnt goes, have you got any YouTube or something of it. I've recently rebuilt mine motor and it goes real well with a msb chip in it but I'd like to pop a nnn Ecu remap in it and always thinking about a vnt. Do you really get bang for ya buck?

    Cheers

depends on how modded you want to talk about.

the couple of disco autos Ive had the chance to play with pre and post chip up also had other work done to them in terms of suspesion and tyres at about the same time.

They did what the owners wanted the way they wanted them to the performance and shifting when they were in normal mode was essentially similar to a stock disco in sports and in sports another step again. Fuel economy went down in one and up in the other but I put that down to the age and driving style of the owners.

In the manuals the only manual disco Ive gotten to drive pre and post also had the Tcase gearing changed to accomodate a lift with bigger tyres I was very happy with the way everything worked in that as was the owner.

    in the defender...

big red was chipped up and scheduled for more but the ex missus kyboshed the budget for it all and we had to sell before I could do more.

I was stoked with the chipping.

Luke, there's a lot of threads on the VNT/VVT/VGT upgrades already - well worth a read. Bottom line is that in my opinion it's the second best upgrade you can do (the first being the Ashcroft Heavy Duty Torque Converter for automatic cars). Well worth it and great bang for buck - I get 15psi of boost straight from idle and it peaks at 21psi. Completely changes the vehicle and makes the TD5 a very very torquey low down motor.

Probably a good time to start looking at them now given the drop in UK pound.

Hybrid turbo is different to a VNT. Hybrid is designed to flow more air than the standard turbo where the VNT has similar maximum flow rates but due to the adjustment gives a huge improvement down low and midrange.

Of note is that Turbo Technics do actually offer what is essentially a VNT version of a hybrid turbo - it's special order only and requires 3" exhaust system.

This sort of level of modded:

Engine - remap, VNT, larger intercooler.
Auto - Ashcroft HD torque converter.
Driveline - Ashcroft axels and CVs, 33" tyres, diff gears to suit, ATB diffs, Tom Woods prop shafts.

    Hey TWR7C,
mine got the manual box in it, so thankfully it won't need a torque converter. I'm thinking of doing the nnn Ecu upgrade and I'm wondering what map you recommencif I was to go down the path of a VNT turbo also. With it I'd need a 3 inch exjaust, inter cooler upgrade and maf replacement aswell?

    Cheers

Having played breifly with one disco like that (but not before it was modded)

add yourself a better exhaust and ensure that the Torque converter is setup to suit your configuration and driving style and you're going to love it.

Already done. Forgot to mention the exhaust on the previous post. TC is Ashcroft HD unit.

Personally I like TD5Inside - he has looked after me well over the years and adjusted the remap as I have changed my modifications with no additional charge. Couldn't recommend more.

Stage 1 and 2 VNT are fine on standard exhaust or better with standard size (2.5") with free flowing boxes. Only Stage 3 requires 3" - Stage 3 is not commonly available though.

Standard intercooler can be used but your silly to skimp on this area.

Standard MAF can be used with dual channel turbo booster box from IRB Developments. Or TD5Alive (Alive Tuning) offer a modified MAF. Some vehicles get lucky and standard MAF is fine - mine wasn't.
