    Newbie with D2

    Hey everyone
Firstly I just thought I would say hi
and I also have a question I'm wondering if any D2 owners have Bilstien shocks under them what I want to know is what type you have and how they go?

    Hey mate

Welcome. I don't have bilstein dampeners I have koni's, but I have a bilstein steering dampened. Both bilsteins and koni's are very good dampeners and they have the benefit of being rebuildable. The koni's are also adjustable...not sure about the bilsteins. You would be very happy with either though.

As for what type...depends on whether you are going to get a lift done. 2 inch or 40mm is the standard lift on a D2. Keeps the ride, handling and doesn't require any further modification. If your getting new dampeners then you might as well get a lift and replace the springs. The dampeners are matched to your lift so you can get standard length ones or extended ones. If your only just into casual 4wding you won't need anything more than the standard spec shocks and not the high perfomance ones or remote canister ones.

You really should discuss your needs with a suspension expert, cause your setup depends on what weight you carry, the type of driving you want to do (touring vs day tripping) and the accessories you might fit.

    Hope that helps...

    Angus

    Hi Gusbus,

Welcome to the forum. As a friendly suggestion, it would pay to choose a title for your post carefully, because someone may not have a look at your post if they just quickly scanned the titles. If your post was titled "need replacement shock absorber for D2", it may attract more attention, especially from the suspension gurus!

Anyway, to answer your question, I have the Bilsteins on the rear of my DII. I would recommend that you buy the stone shields for the Bilsteins, or for any shock for that matter, because the tubes are suceptible to stone damage, being in front of the rear axle, rather than behind it.

Especially with the Billies, which are a monotube, a smart thump from a big rock thrown from the front wheels onto the body of the shock could render it irreparable.

If you are planning to lift your DII, buy the longer Bilstein shocks for front and rear, and be prepared to rebuild your front driveshaft with greasable unijoints in the Double Cardan joint.

You will find the Bilsteins to be quite fade resistant in heavy corrugations but they do get super hot to the touch in those conditions. Don't punish them, and they should last you a long time.

If you are not wanting to lift the Disco, then these are the right Bilstein part numbers:

    Fronts BE56046
    Rears BE56047

Should be able to get them for around $850 delivered for the lot.

Part #'s for the long travel (2" longer) shocks are:-
    Fronts F4-BE5-B994-MO
    Rears F4-BE5-B995-MO
Cost is $462 inc of GST per pair, so for replacing both front and
rear shocks, the RRP is around $924.

These prices are a little old (2007) so the prices could be different these days.

Oops, I think the standard length shock part numbers that I gave above may be slightly incomplete:

The full part #'s for the regular height shocks are:
    Fronts F4 BE5 6046 HO
    Rears F4 BE5 6047 HO

I recently installed Bilstein long travel shocks as part of a 2" lift.
They were $220 ea including GST.
    Very happy with the result.

    Hi tempest,
I too have been investigating Bilsteins and have a contact with the Australian distributor. Their information tells me that they cannot supply Shocks for D2's with SLS. They acknowledge the standard part numbers:

    Fronts BE56046
    Rears BE56047

    However cannot recognise:
    Fronts F4-BE5-B994-MO
    Rears F4-BE5-B995-MO

Are the extended Shocks sourced out of the US? Hope you don't mind me asking as you knowledge on them seems quite extensive, and the Australian distributor is also keen to find out so they can be able to supply to LR owners locally. At the moment they will supply but cannot gurantee them as they are not designed for SLS.

    Thanks
    JB.

I have SLS and Bilsteins, its a common replacement on a 2" lift.. Cant give a realistic comparison though as my old shocks were worn.
