    Spare key

I have just bought a 2002 TD5 with only 1 key. The last key I got cut for my 88 RR was under $10, so the price for a new Disco key blew my socks off. If I was planning to keep the car for a long time I would be tempted to rip out the security stuff and just keep the remote door locking feature.
Is there any solution to a second fully functioning key for under $100?
I am prepared to use a separate radio signaller if necessary.
Liek any self respecting LR owner I am also prepared spend hours and hours struggling with a messy, home made, solution before simply paying for the best solution from the dealer.
    Thanks in advance

    assume you've checked ebay?

There are normally a few "blanks" for sale that you can get cut and matched to your disco ... although these might be more expensive than you'd like.

I recently bought a second hand key from a UK seller, which ended up costing me something like $45 delivered (I only needed the case to replace my second key that was missing its buttons, so I just swapped the guts over).

Until you can get hold of a complete key with locking fob and get it cut and programmed get an ordinary key cut by a proper locksmith (the required blank is a "NE38") Then get the "emergency key access code" for your vehicle from a L/R dealer. At least then if you lose your current key you will be able to open the door and start the beast. (I usually carry this key and the access code in my wallet.)
    regards

    I would NOT..

Buy a key from ebay...that u wish to program to your vehicle.
Unless the key comes with the barcode's then it is a waste of money.
You need both barcode's to program the key. The barcode's are normally on a tag which accompanies the key.

You also need to know what frequency the key is..either 315Mhz or 433Mhz.
Normally the earlier the vehicle 99-01ish are 315Mhz, The from late 01 to 04 they changed frequencies. Not exactly sure from memory

BUT some vehicles have had there transmitter/receiver changed due to lockout!

This is where a dealer comes in handy as you can try both keys at once to determine which is correct & only have to purchase which ever programs.

    Good luck.

Just a note to add to this topic,

Although its "better" to buy a key with the barcode label attatched, its NOT a problem if its missing as ALL the key fobs have the 6 figure barcode (which is a part of the 13 figure on the label) printed inside on the circuit board, so you simply open up the key fob and you can use this code to program the key with Nanocom.

This is one of the main points when Buying a "used" SLS remote, I have not seen one in the flesh yet, but If it has the code on the inside like the Door Keys do, then I bet that can be programmed to.

    Hi Urban Panzer,

I have not tried to program a key via Nanocom, so not sure of the sequence, but with the T4 @ LR you need both the full length barcodes..from memory one is a 15 digit & the other is a 17 digit number.

Just wanting to make sure the customer doesnt get in the poooo! & waste some money.

    Cheers

BMKal has been through this and has given superb instructions on how to program a new/old key using the Nanocom.

Using these instructions enabled me to purchase the proper LR key and program it using my Nanocom. It works a treat and all for about $240.

Even though there is a string of digits on the barcode you only need the 6 for the key to work.

Do a search for key. It even suggested that if you can find a used key you could program it. You just need to find a Nanocom.

The only stumbling point is to figure out the Mhz. Once you find that out you're set.

    .
it dont work, the nanocom requires the full 13 figure code, i tried it with a spare key, if you only enter the 6 digits, it wot code the key to the security system. ended up just swapping the circuit board out as my key had the usual rubber buttons falling out.

    Well thats news to me.

I certainly did not enter the full string of the code. The key locks, unlocks, sets the alarm light inside the vehicle and has never had the alarm go off using the new key.

Another point is that BMKal instructions came direct from Nanocom themselves.

If the key is not matched or synced to the vehicle I believe it would let you know about it real quick.
