Dirt Roads and TD5 fuel filter.

Gday All,just returned from a very rough and corragated Gibb river road..The tyre and suspension carnage was amazing, What surprised me even more was the fact my fuel filter sustained no damage, even the small plastic water drain never got broken off.I must admit it was constantly on my mind and a constant look at the fuel guage kept me busy.
My question is does or has anyone made a cover to protect the filter,I would imagine sooner or later one will have to be punctured or worse, ripped off the mounting bracket.

    Thanks and Cheers Ean

Yep, I think I have posted before on this.

The filter is unlikely to sustain damage but the plastic sensor could possibly get knocked off??...but have not heard of it happening.??

Version 1: a piece of thick truck inner tube wrapped around filter and long enough to cover the plastic connector/sensor on the bottom.
Floppy rubber should absorb any stone hits
Held on with a couple of elecrical ties = you can roll rubber up if you need to drain fuel and then replace rubber/ties with filter replacement.

Version 2: carry a spare 8mm?? bolt and o-ring to replace the sensor if broken off/leaking. ( Need to check the thread pitch etc) You will soon know if you need it 'cos the car will stop!!

Version 3: a length of 90mm??? plastic SWV downpipe( paint it black).
Cut about 4 ?? hacksaw slots length-ways at one end for about 1/4 plus?? of the length of the filter. Slip the tube up over the filter and fix with a worm drive hose clip...over the slotted end. The slots allow the pipe to compress/shrink around the filter and the pipe is too large in diameter in standard form??
I am still using the truck tube version since Cape York in 2001...so you would need to experiment with the plastic tube version and check diameters, vary the number of slots etc.
I am sure you could work it out.

(BTW do a Search in case there are better options)

    Cheers Bob

I've just arrived home to find a pool of diesel under the disco.

Yes the white plastic cap does snap off. Sadly I don't have a spare filter at home. Apart from Bluetac anyone have any quick fix ideas so I can use it tomorrow to get to a parts shop?

Happened to me as well a couple of months ago,the plastic seems to perish.Luckily i had a spare one i take with me on trips,so i used it .

You can also get the broken plastic bit in the thread out with a small screwdriver & using the rubber gaskit from the filter, screw a bolt into the filter. The bolt needs to be either 8 or 10mm thread, cant remember which, around 20 to 25mm long.I now keep one in the glove box.

Ive done ver #3 . But I made one cut the whole length so it could compress. I also drilled a couple of holes at the top, so a cable tie could be looped through and over a fuel pipe to stop it falling off should the clamp come loose. I only used another cable tie to clamp it on.
The only thing that I can say I achieved from it, was that more mud/dust built up around the filter.

Oh well $116 lighter - for a fuel filter!!!???? That'll teach me to go to a main dealer!!! But when desperate, there's not much choice. How come they're only 33 pounds (about $70) from the UK? Obviously individually wrapped and sent first class air mail from the UK.

They have them at supercheap as well, cant remember the cost. They come without the plastic bung,so if you have the model without the water sensor, you just use the bolt.

DONT RE USE THE PLASTIC BUNG THING FROM THE OLD ONE........

I paid $55 at supercheap in Darwin for the ryco equivilant and I thought that was expensive..I usually buy a complete filter set airbagged to Darwin for around $120 that includes oil and air filters as well..rovercraft usually are the cheapest for me but im sure there are heaps of others selling filters..I guess they are non-genuine but im sure you can get genuine alot cheaper than that.
Im sure its the same filter wether the car has the water senser or not, sure someone will correct me if not.

Yep... totally agree... I should have gone elsewhere but sadly I was on public transport since the car was p^ssing of fuel if you switched the ignition on and the Defender was elsewhere on the school run.

I can get on the bus to Austral Land Rover to get a new part - though in hind sight a Taxi out to FWD and back into Brissy might have been cheaper!!

    We live and learn.

Much like this morning - why did a 10 minute job take two hours???

Remove old fuel filter and screw on the new one - having smeared a trace of oil around the seals. Engine won't start - despite it saying that you don't need to "purge" the system when replacing the fuel filter. Go through the procedure to purge the system of air, ignition on and off numerous times...... still can't get the engine started. Wait the recommended time between attempts. Eventually the battery goes flat! Argh!!

Defender on Saturday morning Netball duties - can't find the battery charger.....

A long while later - Defender arrives home with the jump leads - 5 minutes later Disco back to life!!

Just glad I wasn't where we were this time last weekend when it happened - 100kms beyond Winton at Lark Quarry. It would have cost me more than $116 to get it fixed out there!!
