    TD5 Service

We decided to keep the TD5 D2 for a few more years - extremely reliable and tough car. So I decided to carry a few repairs and an engine top end preventative maintenance.

The small coolant hose under the exhaust manifold split, probably due to another broken exhaust bolt, so I decided to replace all coolant lines, water pump, etc etc. fix the broken exhaust studs and replace the plastic dowels in the head with steel dowels.

When the head was out for a skim, a cracked exhaust valve was found - I have never heard of this. I think the potential problem was found just in time.

    Exhaust valve close up

    Parts replaced

Car is running well again - little difference in power.

    Erich,
What were the dowels like and what amount of ks on the car..Mine has 210k on it and with a couple big trips coming up the dowels are in the back of my mind.
Looks like a decent parts list..Were the steel dowels a L/R part or where can they be sorced? Lucky you didnt buy that lot thru L/R in Darwin or you would be talking to the bank manager for a loan for sure.
    Cheers and thanks in advance,
    Ean

Hi, both plastic dowels were broken, but the head gasket was still intact - no leaking to the water jackets. The car has done just on 250,000kms.

I bought most parts through an aftermarket supplier - nearly all are genuine parts, except the radiator. All up without the head skimming was just over $1200. I replaced the radiator because the lower mounts which protrude into the chassis were broken.

I will PM you with details of the supplier.

    Erich,

    Good PM intuition.

Was the exhaust manifold leaking from the cylinder that had the cracked valve?
Has the engine ever overheated to stretch the head bolts, and were the bolts still tight?

    Thanks,
    Graeme

Hi, yes it was No5 cylinder - closest to the firewall and also the last exhaust manifold bolt was the last one at the same end. I have heard of exhaust manifold leaks causing head gasket failures around the same area on some other motors.(non Landrover)

All the head bolts were very tight, requiring an extension on the breaker bar to crack them. There were no leaks in the head gasket. I only removed the head as a PM measure to address the plastic dowels.

But also, the last cylinder is the most prone to failure as it gets hottest - furtherest from the cooling source and tucked in by all the firewall insullation. The same can be said for many other engines.(non Landrover)

I am curious if this is a one off faulty exhaust valve or caused by the overheating or by the exhaust gasket leak. Were it the gasket which caused this I would expect to hear of others with a similar experience as this exhaust bolt is prone to break or come loose.

The engine or should I say the temperature gauge didn't get hot and the car didn't run out of water.

Erich, had this problem with a 36litre Cummins engine on one of the boats I worked on and it happened twice but two different cylenders.after much head scratching and many experts trying to find out why the final answer(if it is to be believed) was the valve springs lost tension.A full set of new springs were fitted and it never happened again, but lots of other things were done as well.
I personally thought it was an injector problem.Doesnt really answer your question only that I have seen this before. Lucky you got it before it broke off as you would be buying afew more parts than that.

    Cheers Ean

    Hi Erich.

Its quite comon for valves to burn when the exhaust leaks (not specifically TD5s) but I've not heard of cracking.

So the head moved without the bolts loosing tension. I think that's something that hasn't previously been known, making any TD5 engine with plastic dowels (mine included) exposed to having the head move. I had hoped this would only occur if overheated.

    Thanks,
    Graeme

    TD5 Service

If the steel dowels are so pathetically cheap, (how much for plastic ones from LR ???) where is LR's logic in installing plastic dowels in the first place ?? Would this not give better longevity for the TD5 motor ??
