Looking for some advice on buying Disco

    g'day

i have joined this site on recommendation of a mate who has just bought a Disco.

Currently I own a 06 pathfinder R51, which has been a great vehicle. Mainly towing a boat, camper trailer and some beach work. Nothing to serious off road.

I am looking at do some decent touring starting with the Birdsville track and hopefully the cape etc. After my mate buying a 02 Disco I have been impressed, especially a the bang you get for your buck second hand.

It appears I can still get reasonable money for my pathfinder, and pick up an 03/04 Disco for Mid to high 20's leaving me with money left over to do plenty of offroad mods.

As you all would be aware I have found vastly different opinions re Land Rovers, negatively mainly form non land rover oweners.

I am seeking any feedback re the reliabilty and suitabilty of the Disco 2 TD5 auto as a tourer considering I will be towing a Trackabout trailer and have 3 young children.

    Thanks

    Nathan

    Welcome Nathan,

I went through the same process about 8 months ago and considered the latest pathfinder quite seriously. I chose the D2 because of some of the things you mentioned they are great value for money. We have 4 kids and camper trailer and love getting away. The D2 has SLS which is awesome , you can load it up and it still sits beautifully on the road. Every seat has good vision. The TD5 was ahead of its time for Torque and economy.

As far as reliability goes i am not sure how to answer it. There are some known issues with them and a lot of it is because there are a lot of electronics in them. You will find out a lot about on this site. You can choose to do a lot of home maintenance or use a good landy mechanic. I have had no trouble with mine and am learning the basics to look after it on the long trips.

The reality is i just like the look and the feel of the discovery.

    Regards

    Nankas

They are a reliable, fuel efficient, and excellent value for money. Many TD5 engines have in excess of 300,000klms without major problems.

Budget to have the oil pump inspection service completed and have a quality low coolant level alarm fitted as soon as you purchase the vehicle.

    Hi
The td5 auto will be perfectly suited to what you want. They do prove to be very reliable, but with anything prevention is the key to reliability. THe way I roll is, if you look after it, it will look after you. If you are aware of the common yet easily fixed problems with the Td5 and know how to fix them you will love the car.
Do a search on this forum, you will find lots of information.

That's because on forums such as this and others .... a lot of members only post when they have issues. Have a look for posts on forums from members who have something positive to say ..... not to many. Log on to a Nissan forum or Mitsubishi ..... it's all the same types of negative messages.

As stated earlier ... there are known bugs with some cheap fixes. Find one that's been well maintained (and loved), keep up the services from a reputable landy mechanic and you can't go wrong.

I love mine ... have put 4000kms of towing a 1 tonne camper trailer on it already with no issues, love the torque, economy and they way it travels .... bit heavy for the left foot in city driving (manual). I've done the oil pump bolt check and the injector harness oil issue repair .... Think I paid $600 for both. Thinking of a chip upgrade .... definitely putting in coil-rite airbags.

    Good luck in your search!

    Cheers

    Craig

Thanks for the feedback guys it is much appreciated. I am hopefully going to have a look at one this arvo, an 03 TD5 auto, with a few extras. I will see how I go.

It is on the North Side of Brisbane, if i wanted to get a pre purchase inspection done, can anyone suggest a Landy mechanic on the northside.

    thanks

There are 2 up on the Northside Nathan. MR Automotive at Redcliffe and Kedron Rovertech at Brendale. I think MR are open Saturday mornings and Rovertech not.

TD5 is a great engine. Just make sure you don't overheat it - they don't like that a lot! As mentioned above, a coolant level alarm is very cheap insurance.

If you want more poke out of it, you can chip them very easily and cheaply.

Just had a look at the car, it is an auto TD5 2003 SE, looks stock but has been chipped. Has a DVD player and is a 5 seater. Looking at around $23 for it. One owner, serviced regualry and looks like it has never left the blacktop.

I was chasing some advice on mods. As mentioned earlier I want to take it touring birdsville, cape maybe a lap of Aus in a few years.

What mods do you think are essential and any idea on price would be good.

I was thinking a snorkel, cargo barrier, uhf and roof tray as a starting point. do you think I need a suspenion upgrade? What does a bull bar cost? Would a nudge bar or scrub bars do?

    Thanks

You'll have a lot of time to do mods.

definitely get a good uhf. Try and get them to do a good deal on a hand-held as well.... very useful (but not a need)

you probably don't NEED a snorkle yet but keep it on the list. (will possibly need one on the cape trip.)

cargo barrier is a good thing to have too.

Roof baskets can be handy, but it depends if you NEED it. You can fit a fair bit of stuff in them with a cargo barrier.

If it's a 5 seater, it may not have SLS option. Perhaps look at spring assist airbags. (around $300) especially if you're loading it up and putting a trailer on.

We have 2.5 kids and tow an Aussie Swag. Some of our recommended touring mods would be....

    Good spotlights and bar
    Dual battery
    Fridge
    compressor

    all the best
    Waz
