you dont need it for the crank, just the cam...
the ones that IVe done Ive positioned the crank at TDC locked the cam to the head and then put it together. double checking the alignment before torquing up all the bolts.
Hi chaps. I am trying to help a french pal explain to his spanner man how to set the timing on his TD5 having refitted the head. The spanner man did not block the crank when stripping the head, which I gather is a good idea.
I have never worked on a TD5 (I pay the garage) and am hoping that someone can help me identify where the locking bolt is fitted to lock up the crank.

its in the bell housing. remove a 13mm headed plug and it fits in there its about at 7 o'clock
I used a air line fitting in mine.
Cut of one side and drill out.
Screw into the bell housing as mentioned and slide the drill in shank first.
Havn't got the size on hand but could dig it up if needed.

Once timmed get the spanner man to rotate crank twice till drill slips into the fitting,the cam lock pin should also slot into place.
Took me 2 goes as fair amount of adjustment on cam pully.
