I had a set of 245 x 75 x 16 BFG Mud Terrains on my D1.
It had a 50mm lift & bullbar.
The guards were not cut.

235 85 16 is 31.5" and fits under the guards on standard rims.
standard tyres were 28" and the only thing that really fouls are the rear part of the rear arch (so you need to do a camel cut) and the front radius rods on full lock may hit.
you will need to do at least a 30mm spring lift as well.
Tyre size comes down to where you live......
the southern boys might be able to run the larger sizes however in Queenland you can't go larger than 15mm over standard.
This makes the legal (max) size for a Disco and Rangie 245/70 16.
31/10/15 are not aloud in Queensland.
The law makers have been considering changing it to reflect the southerners however this has now been in the pipeline for over four years.
It can't be a bad state as the southerners are moving up here
Hope this helps

aut viam inveniam aut faciam
Running 285/75/16s on mine with a 2-inch spring lift and chopped guards with flexi flares. Just clears nicely.
I would say go for around the 245/75/16 size (pretty much 31"s) and you won't have to deal with gearing loss
