    97 disco with HS2.8

We're looking to purchase a disco in the next couple of days.

Went for a look today, it's a 97 series1 disco, auto, sage green metallic, very tidy inside, and newly fitted International HS2.8l turbo diesel (vehicle has done 260k on odometer, with roughly 50k kms done on engine - fitted by Hobbo, at lyndas landrovers).

Only drawbacks are the roof lining starting to let go, perishing steering wheel, and paint on roof starting to fade.

Can't seem to find too much inf or reports on the 2.8, so are there any things to look out for with this vehicle?

    Thanks in advance.

    Reece.

I,ve only ever seen good reports on the engine.

It was based on the 300Tdi and improved in a number of ways, including passages for cooling water flow. Thanks to the VNT turbo and increased displacement it produced significantly more torque.

I don't know if they fixed the cr&p timing belt pulleys, spares availability or interchange with 300Tdi parts.

Head linings can be fixed by a motor trimmer, or search for some of the many threads in this forum.

You will find threads on here about problems with the power windows - solder joint on circuit board and the rollers in the winder mechanism.

Inspect for usual mechanical problems, also cracks/distortion in body area around the rear body mounts (cross member) and those in front of the rear wheels (sills).

If he, not like it, you give me.

CHANGE the black plastic bungs (Tcat House & Radiator) to brass MDE plugs.
They have a habbit of blowing out.

    Thanks Guys!

Well, we picked her up last night, and I had honours of driving it home.

Feels nicer to drive than Dads 85 Rangie, but not quite as comfy as my 75. I'm not a fan of the 4spd auto...........yet. A few more drives should settle me in...

But since Mum can only drive an auto, it's a catch 22 situation.

the first 1/2 of the "go" pedal gives very little response, but after that, the turbo kicks in and she launches quite nicely. Driving up some local hills in the Rangie would max out at 80 - 90 kph. This thing will ride 120 all the way with ease, if you keep the turbo spooling.

Has an ARB front bar fitted, with lights. 2 long range tanks under the sills, new dual battery setup, poly air bags, 2 spare wheels and tyres, and we pick up the cargo barrier and roof-racks later.

One thing we did notice was the fitment of sway bars. I think they'll be coming out, unless anyone can think of a good reason to keep them there.

Have they flipped the manifold on this motor? or have they changed the turbo back to a 300 TDi turbo?

Hmm yes lots of questions! The HS 2.8l also came out with a non- VGT turbo... Could this be it?
