    green "S" light on dash

    Hi all

I have been asked by someone in my industry who recently bought a discovery II automatic about a light on the dash.

He showed me that when you press the "mode" button near the gearlever the S green light with the circle around it comes on in the dash and he tells me the revs at which the gears change increases. He calls it the sport mode.
He says sometimes while driving in normal mode the car seems to change up two gears instead of one and then this green "s" light starts flashing. If he stops, turns off the engine and starts again the fault disappears till the next time.
He asked me to find out what is the cause and whether he needs to take it in to the experts. I have no clue about disco's
    Thanks
    James

When the S (and M) lights flash, it signals a transmission fault & it enters limp mode (locked in 3rd gear).

It can be caused by a few things:
    Low battery voltage
Inhibitor switch fault (A/C drain can drip onto it)
Too much power going through the transmission (big chips in Td5s)

You might have forgotten one Scott,

I find in mine if I start the car with the CDL engaged after a while eg 5 mins both M & S flash. BUT I also have all the warning lights on as well.

2000 model with 2004 CDL kit

How does the system know Scott?

and will it shut itself down to prevent damage? (limp mode)

The little men inside can't run fast enough with the chipped motors. Their legs get tired very quickly, hence 'limp' mode.

Hmmm....glad I came across this thread as I am having a ****** of a time with the M & S coming on. At first it was a one off then nothing...now it seems to kick in anytime I engage Reverse...probably 7/10 times. Turn off car...start and is fine.

Am hoping to get into dealer next week....as I also have Smokey having a habit of dropping onto its bumpstops when I have stopped car and opening back door or side doors. Has happened once on the move....but then will go days without doing it.....probably needs another thread for that one ,

    Regards

    Stevo

Gday,my Dad had that happen on his 2004 disco from brand new and it was oil in the injector harness and kept putting the ecu in 3rd gear limp mode..(or thats what they told him,but it never happened again after they cleaned it)..Hope this might help.

coil conversion will fix that for good mate, plus it improves the offroad ability and performance no end,

but the only time ive had this issue was turning the car on too fast, like just spinning the key from off to engine start in 1 sec,

other then that its new to me....
