    Which Diagnostic Tool for a14MY D4 SDV6

    I'm new to Discos and becoming paranoid about being stranded out in the desert if the "machine that goes beep" as we call it, decides not to play. (We have stepped up - or down? from a 2001 LC Troopy and even the central locking freaks us out!)
    I'm pretty good at mechanics and most problems in the Troopy I could fix given the parts and tools.. as the spin doctors would say "its transparent".
    Basically I need to be able to get out of the poo. I'm reading about hard resets, clearing faults etc. I don't want to reprogram the beast.
    So, which tool? Hearing about Nanocom, Hawkeye etc.. all a bit confusing.
    I'm also hearing about people carrying around 1000s$ worth of diagnostic kit.. I have to leave space for the beer and fishing tackle.
    I don't want the embarrassment of being stuck out near Docker River or Papunya when all it needed was to cancel a fault or something.

    IMO for D4 the best is this tool Integrated Interface Diagnostics Tool Discovery 4 DA6406 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order. , it can stay permanently connected and works with the car's display... i've seen it in action and seemed brilliant to me(dont be scared it's not actually built by britpart)... though for D4 you can find much cheaper multivehicle tools which have coverage for it but they have limited access to specific systems... unfortunately the real risky issues which can let you immobilised are with such electronic system's malfunction which are not covered by generic tools

    I'll add my vote for the IID tool as well. Good price, great funcunality and small/easy to carry around everywhere

    although on their website it states that Britpart is the manufacturer

    So they say about Hawkeye: "Manufacturer: Bearmach" but it's made by Omitec the builder's of main dealer's tool Tetbook T4, britpart in the GAP case it's only distributor not manufacturer, like bearmach for hawkeye, here's the manufacturer for GAPIID: Home - GAP Diagnostic i wouldn't have said it's not Britpart if it was believe me

    The second page of the manual has the warning " The IIDTool is not designed to be left in place for long periods. Please unplug after use!"

    I have only had mine for a few days, so far it is easy enough to use. The Bluetooth interface is especially good. I was originally going to buy one of the black box tools, however while I have read some bad reports for black box products everything I have seen for IIDTool has been good.

    Ease of use of GAP IID Tool

    I'm considering a fault reader/clearer as one of the recommended "critical spares" for my D4 MY14 when on a remote trip. I'm not planning to play around with tweaks or changes to the D4's systems. So I'm wondering about "ease of use" in that context for the IID Tool.

    Does it only provide 4-digit codes and if so, is the fault code list on this forum useful, given that it was prepared for the other diagnostic tools that seem to be more commonly owned by members?

    Mainly I'm wondering if, as a layman, am I wasting ~$600 for something I won't be able to use to keep on the road?

    Hi, these dedicated tools are not behaveing like the generic OBDII readers, they will give you clear code description, though if you want only to read/clear codes and watch some live data this tool Land Rover Discovery 4 Diagnostic Scan Tool Fault Code Reader - iCarsoft i930 | eBay is cheaper and has good reviews

    The IID tool provides explanations for the fault codes. How you interpret them to pin point the exact cause of a fault is another matter.
