itchy feet (cape york)

Well Im starting to get itchy feet and thinking about taking the family on a trip to Cape york.
A couple of friends are interested also. There fuel tanks are smaller than mine
Can some one tell me the approx distances between fuel stops? Im wondering how many Jerry's they might have to carry. Im thinking Id only need to carry one, is this correct? or better 2.
Any way, all input is appreciated

Yours is a petrol,so i dunno.
If your friends have TD5's,one would be enough, unless you plan to go into some real remote areas,or they are towing something.
I took one on both trips & didn't use it on either, but was good to have it just in case.
The Hema map is your friend,it has all fuel locations on it & heaps of other info.Available at many camping shops & 4X4 shops,.

A well prepared vehicle is essential, also a good set of tyres. Also pack light.
Do a search on this site there are heaps of threads about the Cape.

Good luck & have a good trip,it is a fantastic place.

when I went about 8 years ago, petrol and diesel where about the same price. All our fourbies had standard tanks(Pajero, Jackaroo Diesel, 4runner) it was only the drive along the frenchmans track to Chillie beach that it got close.
I would take one spare empty jerry per car. Than if you hole a tank or need to do a fuel run, youve got them.

about 600K is the longest run you can do without hitting a fuel stop unless you are being perverse about avoiding them. (that doesnt guarentee that they will have fuel)

when I did it I had a usable 300l of dieso, ok fuel, on board and I still carried a jerry, we needed it to sort a disco that holed a tank. Admitedly we got lucky and the damage was done at the cape so for us it was a case of tow it back, repair the tank and dump in the jerry.

Go & get yourself the Hema map... It has the fuel stations marked!

In reality there are numerous fuel stops. The issue is whether they will all have fuel. I managed in in my td5 with a 60l tank without having to use jerry cans. (I did use them but could have managed without quite easily)

The fuel station at the Jardine was turned off for maintenace when we were heading back.

That was the only one we came across, but again it didn't matter to us.

To be safe just take 2 cans if you have space, but assuming the stations are open, you most liikely wont need them. (I took 3 from memory)

As has been said the Hema map has them all marked. You can then plan a route to suit.

We didn't have any issues with fuel stops 3.9 V8, but I do have twin sill tanks fitted. The issue that we did have is that you are unable to get anything above 91 octane any further north than Cairns, so take plenty of octane booster. It was a cost we hadn't considered - it would be cheaper to buy locally and take with you, especially if you need 98 Octane for the motor.

To give you some idea we used just over 1400l of fuel and many bottles of octane booster - Brisbane to Brisbane
