Hmmm....Boat Trailer
A few years ago whilst working in the Hunter I decided to take my 14ft tinny + 30hp motoor and trailer up there to try a bit of fishing when not working. The car towing was my Ford courier work ute. Myself and my strapping young apprentice got as far as the Brooklyn Bridge before the wheels fell off.
I didn't check the bearings. Dummy. The only thing we could come up with was to chuck the whole thing onto the full length roof rack. Trailer and tinny minus the motor, it went in the back. Needless to say we got quite a few funny looks from other drivers but we made it to Toronto intact and without getting booked. However, the ute suffered a couple of creases on the roof. Worst of all the engine seized on the return trip. Oooops. ![]() Cheers Rob

Lets just say it wasn't my rangie and it wasn't my choice to put it up there, but it worked well. It only had to travel about 20km

Two three-seater lounges, base to base and the innards filled with a bucketload of stuff, plus five inside and any space left over packed with gear.
In a Subaru 1800 L wagon. Sydney to Elands, near Taree. Wasn't so much the weight as the wind resistance. |

Two cases -
1. Melbourne members (older ones anyway) will remember that the section of Punt Rd downhill from Victoria Pde used to be very rough. One Saturday morning in the early seventies I came down there and there was a Ford Cortina stopped by the side of the road near the bottom of the hill - as a result of the bumps, his roofrack had collapsed under the weight of the seven bags of cement on it - and so had the roof. 2. Touring in France in 1973, we followed a Citroen ID19 wagon, carrying on the roof what looked like an almost complete bedroom suite - double bed, wardrobe, dressing table. It was travelling very slowly, apparently because the load had shifted and was leaning about forty-five degrees to one side. We followed it for some time, not game to pass! I actually have a photo but a) it is on a slide, b) I have no idea where it is. John

Dare I say it....spotted about 5 years ago in NWest W.A....interstate plates. A Defender ( sorry ) with 12 jerry's of fuel on the roof rack. Assorted other gear, but this lot got my attention. Even at camping ground speeds the poor Dfr leant over at a dangerous angle. What ever possessed the owner to do it. I cannot honestly recall if it was petrol or diesel. Crazy anyway. Should have known better.

Imagine if.....
Imagine what they could get up to if they had roof racks here in Somalia?

I drove to adelaide from the far north of s.a. with a coffin strapped to the roof of the police 4wd vehicle, (one of the few up there with a roof rack), I needed to go to adelaide for court, the vehicle needed to be replaced (mileage) and the coffin was an old metal lined police transport coffin (looks normal outside but fully tin lined so body could be ice packed to travel via train in coffin to adelaide!) and was headed to the Police historical society (full of old station records etc!). So I left my 4wd with the other station, took theirs so I could swap it for a new one, I only had to travel a few 100ks up to swap cars, meaning he didnt have to do 1000 each way to swap his car over.
Anyway, Got quite a few looks, and when I was asked at the lights if the coffin was empty, I couldnt bring myself to lie, so I answered "NO". maybe I shouldve said more, they appeared quite ruffled at that stage! I didnt take photo/s... I expect someone proabably would have/or at least wanted to somewhere along the trip!! (this is when a mobile phone was very much like a brick, so less cameras about and they used a different image storage device, called FILM!) Cheers digger
