    D4 v LC200

In the current edition of overlander magazine they put a D4 up against a LC200. In virtually every comparison the D4 trumps the 200 but in the conclusion the journo says the 200 is a better vehicle because they don’t like the 19 inch rubber.

This line is getting so old. Doesn’t seem like that long ago that the same was being said about 17’s.

It’s about time they had a proper look at the tyres available in 19 inch and whilst the variety isn’t the same is 17 or below there are certainly options.

Or is it time I took my green landrover blindfold off?

I would take a D4 over a LC200 any day of the week and twice on Sunday; hell I'd take a D3 over a LC200. BUT my personal jury is still out regarding the 19" wheels. I understand they got a lot of punctures with the 19s compared with the others.

But you are correct, tyre technology moves pretty quickly and when you're an innovator sometimes you move slightly ahead of what is currently available. It won't take long for tyre manufacturers to catch up, especially considering the number of D4s being sold.

    $0.02.

To be honest if I was offered either of those vehicles I'd take the 200.

Not because I think its a better 4wd or because I'm of the opinion that LRs are unreliable or because I'm one of those deluded people who cracks the ****s and thinks a Toyota will solve all their problems... but simply for a change. I like Toyotas as much as Rovers.

It sounds so much simpler to just drop the line "...'Cruiser" when asked what you drive at it's accepted without any question. Like people who come out. No more lying and defending yourself every five seconds of the day. "Sure the 2.5 litres pulls as much a 4.2, and uses less fuel doing it..." etc.

Well all that and the fact that I just bought 30 raffle tickets for a new 200 GXL

To be honest...I think LR, Toyota and Nissan have all lost their bloody marbles when it comes to the latest 4WD's....the main area being in tyres. They are being built as on road warriors....if you want to take them off road.....the amount of hassle required is ridiculous. D4...minimum sized 18's and no place for a spare battery off the factory floor.

Now, for sure there are options to overcome that......but it is becoming a joke. Same with Yota and Nissan.......again big, luxury bling machines where a fortune has to be spent so that you can get off road. At least with the D3 you can get 17's. I had 19's to start with on my D3...dead set pain in the arse.....shredded 3 tyres. Got 18's..better but ridiculous sidewalls if you stay legal...air down and watch your alloys get chewed to smithereens. Then there is the cost of 18,19,20 inch tyres...be prepared to bend over and take it up the hooty.

I loved my D3 and will get another one...would only consider a diesel with 17's ( saw a nice one with Bighorns in a 265/70/17 now thats what Im talkin bout)....but for doing medium to hard off road......my D2 with 16's and decent rubber goes places I struggled with the D3 with 18's and Grabbers. With the KM2's, it is a much better tyre in an 18...but still side wall issues.....I spent enough $$$ on tyres due to sidewalls to know that my 10ply LT Bighorns.....15 trips.....left the 18-19 inch option for dead...even with the Terrain Response etc,

    Regards

You don't think that maybe it's LR catering to Eurocentric "fashion" and Australians take what they get while Toyota considers its Australian and Middle East Customers as they are the major markets?

I do not think it would be hard to develop a brake package that will enable 17s to fit, seeing Toyota do it with the Prado. It's just that LR do not give a damn about what Australia wants.

Tyres are expensive when you enter in the 18 inch plus market. But over the next 2 years they will be so cheap and technology will be just as hard core we will be whining about 22 inches!

Personally, i love the look of large rims on the D4, but yes they are no means a rim for proper offroad (Unless you dont care about marking the rim)

Anyway to my point, the D4 is now aimed at large families and people with money that want luxury and able to adventure offroad. This vehicle does that in every way in normal HT tyres and proven time over again.

I just got my D4 yesterday with MTR's and i cant wait to test them out. What i love about the 19's is the look great and i can still get proper grip for offroad. Previously on my FL2 i had to swap the rims every time i wanted to go out. After a few tyre changes i gave up and left the 17's on.

Give the market time, and watch the options that roll out...

I will bet Toyota only consider one thing when it comes to speccing cars. PROFIT! they still use 17's and 18's on the 200 series as they are cheaper to use and they work. If Toyota ever bring out a new model that doesn't reek of maximising the bottom line i'll buy one.(shh, don't tell anyone I used to have one....)

Overlander really have a bee in their bonnet about the D4.

4x4 Australia magazine have just done a Prado v Pajero v D4 with 2.7 TD.

They used the 2.7 to make it an even contest as with the 3litre it would be an unfair contest.

    The D4 won this.
