    Engine immobiliser ... ?????

    Hi All,

It appears I have developed some sort of problem with my Disco (1998 D1 .. 3.9). When I unlock it and get in it starts no problems .... if I turn it off and wait a few minutes and then try to restart the thing it does nothing. It appears the immobiliser has flicked itself on some how as the little red vehicle indicator on the left hand side of the dash flashes on and nothing happens.

If I lock the vehicle and then unlock it again it starts ....... but then does the same thing if i turn it off again and try to start without locking and unlocking it ..... What's going on with it .........

I hope this makes sense .....

Are you using the key or the remote? Only the remote turns the immobiliser on/off.

Isn't that supposed to happen - the point of a proper immobiliser is that if you forget to lock the car the immobiliser comes on automatically. In my Freelander of the same vintage (most likely the same immobiliser) if you stop the engine and open the door the immobiliser comes on automatically irrespectively of whether I have locked the car. If I sit in the car with the engine off the immobiliser comes on after about 3 minutes. To switch the immobiliser off I have to hit the "unlock" button on the alarm fob.

It would seem your immobiliser is working as it is supposed to.

Thanks for your replies so far .....

I am using the key as the remote is only working when it wants to .... and yes I have changed the batteries. The key does the same thing as the remote by the looks of it .......

The immobiliser has only just started doing what it is doing ..... it has not done this before so I would say that it is not working property and there is a fault .........

    Any other suggestions ....

In most landie security systems the immobiliser is only disabled by the remote not the key. The exception is where the remote has failed or lost where there is a sequence that is followed with the key in the drivers door lock - turning left and right in a special sequence and within given timeframes - is normally unique to each vehicle. The process for my Freelander takes about 10 minutes and is a real pain.

My remote also used to play up - it was a dry joint where the battery contacts join the circuit board - this is how I learned all about the emergency system after my remote failed when I was at work and I could not disable the immobiliser. I was able to solder it up OK.

But then your security system might be different to mine - what does your handbook say?

    Thanks Garry ....

Funny that you have mentioned that your remote had dodgy connections .... I opened mine up not long ago to check on it and would you believe that the solder joints have all come loose ....... I am hoping that this is my actual problem and when it is re-soldered things will return to normal for me .....

    I'll keep you posted .....

    Cheers ... Jason

if its anything like the defender immobiliser......the remote needs to be near the ignition switch for it to start.......

so if your remote has faulty contacts and is not working.......this could be what is happening......
its not giving the necessary signal to start......

the fact that it has only started to do this could simply mean another connection has lost contact in the remote recently........

    just my thoughts........

Those remotes aren't cheap, as I found out last year, so I'd be trying to fix it before going to replace it, if possible.
