That doesn't seem a good Hella part number. I'm wondering if it stands for "Registered Design #"? Post a photo of the lens or have a look here

G'day LTCTerry

I would be supprised if the original light units were Hella, as Landrover was fitted with lucas electrics and lights units, both as head/side/blinkers in the front and also on the rear,BUT the Hella round lens/lights with Festoon Type (sausage) globes were often used as subtitute as they were easily availabe and a lot cheaper than the correct Lucas lights, particularly after Lucas P/L left Australia in the 1980's and parts supply dried up,not sure about parts supply in NZ but if you post pics somebody will be able to identify the units for you,if, they still have the metal/rubber or plastic bodies with bayonet type globes, they are lucas lamps with Hella lens screwed in place of the correct lens, particulary on rear lamps,as mine had an odd one on it when purchased in 86.

cheers

New Land Rover

Greetings Gents:
Am posting (hopefully) some pics of the expatriate Land Rover....took some 2 months to make the voyage from Auckland to Tacoma, Washington. Have got it running reasonably well now. Current focus is the rust, part replacement and a bit of wiring correction. Interestingly, several thousand dollars of work was recently done at North Harbour Brakes & Steering and R J Don Panelbeaters in Auckland per receipts that accompanied the Landy. Apparently the work was done as a "Warrant of Fitness"........this is a yearly requirement in Australia & New Zealand??
Rechecked the tailight lenses and they do, indeed, say "Hella made in Australia RD# 54519.
".
The pics show the current state of the Landy. The plan is to repair/replace the panels in the footwells, respray to original green color and generally do some tidying. Current project is to replace the front sidelights, turn signals & headlights, along with new wiring.
Thanks again for your collective help!!
Terry

Have had work done by RJ Don's before. They are OK, did good work for me on more than one vehicle.

A vehicle of that age must pass a Warrant of Fitness every six months. The testing is comprehensive and any failures must be corrected within a month before the warrant is issued. If the vehicle is driven on the road without one the driver gets a ticket and fine.

Those are the ones in the photo? They look like trailer lights to me. Series III lights are round.

Looks pretty tidy from what I can see. Shame they went and painted over the galvanising on the door tub caps. Is the bumper painted or is it just my eyes?

Hey Terry,

Cheers for the pictures. Nice old station wagon you got there.

I see Alan has already answered to some extent. I'll continue posting my reply so sorry about repeats.

Warrent of Fitness, colloquelly [sp] known as a WOF. Required every six months and is a check of the vehicle by a .govt authorised mechanic. On passing, a small certificate (decal) is then afixed to the inside of the upper righthand side of the windscreen. Is needed for insurance purposes and such like. A vehicle can be ordered off the road if it fails to display a current WOF and a fine of NZD200 I think ensues. Unfortunately, with some of these things, it is possible to find WOF stations that are easier to pass at than others.

if it has reciepts indicating panel work for WOF purposes the rust was deemed to be structural. Is there any rut work been done on the chassis or is it confined to the footwells?

As Alan noted, the work most likely is to a reasonable standard. NZ is not so large that bad workmanship goes unnoticed

The number is short for "Registered Design 54519". I don't think it is a part number. I have on my one Res. Des. ######. The lenses look very similar if not identical to the ones on my own 1984 Land Rover 110 truck deck. I have bulbs in my one not tubes like you show in your pictures. These are fairly common place over here and are available from most FLAPS here. They are also commonly used on trailers and and other vehicles of similar vintage that have flat deck/tray backs or whatever you guys call then over there.

Next time I am in one of the FLAPS here I'll check to see if these lenses are still 'off the shelf". most likely are as they are quite common.

All the best,

Phil

Cheers Alan, another useful manual to have on file. Wouldn't have a parts catalogue for early 110 would you?

New Land Rover

Thanks:
Lenses pictured are the ones that were on the Landy when it arrived. The lenses match the pictured housing.

The door windows should be unpainted?? Have thought about ordering some new as the existing front door windows are a bit rusty.

Is replacing the various panels in the footwells beyond the scope of the "amateur restorer"?? There are various rust holes that appear to have been there for some time. They had electrical or duct tape over them when the Landy arrived.

They are. I was going to buy some from Appco in Henderson for my trailer. Got LEDs instead (12-24V ).

Same shape. Pretty much all the new trailer lights use the long bulbs now I think.

As Alan has pointed out, most likely not OEM. Maybe you would want to look at what is OEM if you are going to restore to similar quality as the car in the foreground...

Not sure about the repair work as I have not had one bad enough for me to need to do it. I have small holes in my old 110 there and it currently has duct tape keeping the feet dry. Small holes were rust killed/POR15 before the tape. I am sure there are many on this list better able to guide you on this than I.

EDIT: I suggest you take some detailed photos of the damage and post a specific query on the Series III Forum of this site. This thread may well be overlooked in "General Chat".

Phil
