Lotion for itchy dog?

Long story short.. our dog has allergies to something and has to have a skin ***** test in a fortnights time.

As a result we are not able to apply any steroid cream / cortisone, anything like that.

The poor thing is very red and itchy on her stomach and chest, so I was hoping there might be some non-medicinal lotion we could put on her to ease the symptoms. I'm not expecting it to go away, just make it less annoying and painful for the dog.

Any ideas that I can run past the doggy dermatologist ?

We have a dog with allegies too. When not on the steroids, we use DermCare Malaseb wash in conjunction with either Vetex cream or a Tea Tree Oil based Antiseptic cream. The Vetex is excellent, but can be hard to find. You can get these products from most pet stores.

Perhaps try changing her diet. The cheaper dog foods are full of 'additives' and 'fillers' which frequently cause exactly the symptons you describe. Buy a quality dog food and see how you go. And regardless of what you are feeding her a diet change might help anyway.

The other thing is to check out her environment for plants which cause these allergic reactions in dogs. Too many for me to list here.

Try dog food for dog's with sensitive skin - it's the only one that stops my beagle going red, exactly as you described. Pretty much an instant fix, you'll see it improve in about 3 days.

In the meantime, you can put some person cream on him. Pawpaw ointment is good, as is amolin and other nappy rash things. Just don't use anything that isn't safe to eat.

G'day Vlad

Does this get worse shortly after you mow the grass?? if so it is a condition called Qld Itch, caused by the dog coming into contact with the sap from the grass after cutting, our cattle dogs used to suffer from it, "the Management" is having a look through her files as to what we used,it is basically a re-action to the sap,she said that you can use "Malaseb" medicated foam,"helps control itching" the other product is "Pyohex"also a medicated foam,"designed to remove dirt & scale, degrease the skin and kill micro-organisms"or you can try "quitich"lotion, available through dstore.com.au or from you local produce store, the Redcliffe produce store opposite the WOW centre should stock it,it is used by horse and greyhound people a lot

cheers

I would use Pyohex over malaseb...how ever I would use it in conjunction with a cortisone spray which you can't do due to your testing. I would also be careful bathing with either of these before a test, although you should be able to bath and make sure you just dont bath a couple of days before test is to be done.

another good one is Epi-sooth this is an oatmeal based shampoo and does help in a lot of itchy cases.

the guys are right with the food, although could be a big expense if this is not what is causing the reaction...science diet do a prescription diet called ZD which can be used for food allergy dogs

Also pro plan do a food called sensitive stomach which also might help.

Again looking for something in you back yard is the key if its not something that is apparent a lot of the time. My boxer in summer always got pussy pimple down at the dog park but never anywhere else..put it down to something growing down there or potentially the contaminants in the river like oil etc. I just used to bring him home and each time make sure I made the effort to wipe his skin down with a damp clean cloth.

if he was particularly dirty I would just bath him anyway..in a half decent shampoo..none of the cheap crap that is just full of perfume, managed to keep him under control.

I don't know if you use a good flea treatment but don't over look this either if your dog has a flea allergy it only take one or two to get em going

This is the one we used for our daft mutt Border Collie/Staffy cross after he managed to lay in a patch of something nasty. Seemed to help.

With the itching at least, not with the being daft.

The so called exspert vet person reckons that iots not a food allergy and we feed hr the relatiely expensive Dr harry dry food anywa.

Also we had her in a "rashie" bodysuit for a few weeks which seems to have ruled out a contact allergy. Besides, "mow my grass" don't make me laugh ! i hardly ever do that !

Havre long before gottwen rid of any opf the wandering jew, moses ina cradle al that sort of rubbish tha are well known dog allergens.

As far as shampoo is concerned we used to use malaseb and now the vet has given us some oatmeal stuff to use, but ti doesnt seem to make a lot of difference to the itching.

UncleHo do you know whats in that quitich (isn't that a game in harry Potter? ) stuff?
