There are a few problems with this model starting to show up as they get older.

My brother has the 3.2 diesel and it has covered 80,000km and is off the road at the moment getting its 5th new steering column changed. The splines in the actual column wear.

The original column lasted 60,000km but since then he has only been getting 5,000km out of a steering column and his Triton is a work car and rarely used offroad.

The only answer is that the steering damper could have had it allowing the shock of driving on bitumen to shake the steering column - however no one at Mitsubishi seems interested and they seem content to just change the steering column as needed.

    Poor bugger.

I've seen Discos bend like that, too.

    Ron,

I have seen that Mitsu photo before. But I have never seen a disco chassis brake....under what conditions have you seen it, what year was it, and was it rusty

    Cheers

PS. There is no comparison between a disco chassis and a Triton which is why im thinking that the Disco must have had something seriously wrong with it (like a previous dodgy cut and shut!)

I have the photos I took here somewhere. If I recall correctly it was a D2 that bent behind the rear spring mounts. It hadn't been cut and shut.

I'll see if I can find them.

I also recall good D2 chassis cracking just in front of the firewall. I also recall a company was selling a chassis repair kit to fix the problem.

I also have read threads on this problem on AULRO some years ago.

Maybe a search will find them.

Yes, and I definitely have the pix of the cracked Disco chassis - just behind the steering box. I was just looking at them. LR made a repair kit KUZ000120 (see below):

A month back I helped weld up a Troopy that had snapped in two in front of the firewall. They have been cracking chassis for years and Patrol chassis fail quicker than the ZD30 ever did. Pat

    Hey Ron,
    How you going?
Was that D2 flogged over rough ground? over loaded ??
Haven't heard anything about it in the U.K. when I lived there, will mention it to my former boss he was running one.
    regards Andy

Given that it was Land Rover that produced a repair kit it indicates to me that this issue was a well known problem.
