Should have kept the tub maybe?
There is a piece a couple years back on someone who buggered around with a 130 in that way, but for the life of me I can think who it was....may have been the Ho Hars have a look and see if it was.
Good luck
ok.more advice please.....I'm sure others have come across this problem and I'm interested in how it has been resolved.......no point re-inventing the wheel. Have just built a new tray for a 1999 130 ute. When I put the filler on, the fall from the filler to the tank is bugger all. Have had to pull out the mesh filter insert so I can fill the dam thing. The problem I have is driving around, the diesel "slopping" about in the tank is dripping back out the filler cap (lockable and new). The problem is obviously the shallow angle between the cap and the tank but I'm missing something.......the 130 is a ute, the tray that's on is standard height of the chassis plus or minus say 30-50mm???? surely this aint normal???? appreciate any advice.

I had a similar issue with my 110 ute, despite replacing the cap with a new one (the new one was actually worse). I ended up putting two of the tiny ball weights on the see-saw-type vent flap inside the cap, which helped a little, but largely resorted to under filling the tank a lot of the time. My 130 now has a very high tray floor (on the outsides) so I don't have the same issue.
Have you considered cutting a hole through the tray floor and making up some sort of cover plate? You might need a 90 degree bend for the filler tube (sourced from exhaust shop perhaps). This way the filler entry will be as high as possible. This isn't ideal, but the only other idea I came up with was to block the vent in the cap and run a breather up to the tray headboard.
James.
I pulled the HCPU off mine to fit an ally tray earlier this year and to get the 255/85s to clear the underside of the tray I had to have the tray fairly high. as a consequence the filler is fairly close to original height and just has a short length of exhaust tube inserted to extend it for the wider tray. I did cut and shut the tiedown rail to get the stock filler as high as possible. No problems woth a 127 L Longranger tank though.
Is the tray high enough?
You can use a Marine 'Dieso" filler, they use a screw on cap which seal out water as they are usually mounted flush on a deck.
You could use it to seal the filler as it is now or mount it thru the tray.
I may even have one in the shed.
There might be a bit of info in here somewhere. I can't for the life of me remember the top end of the fuel filler - we used Series2 sealed Disco caps though and sent breathers from each tank to a high point.

Step one. Drive to the wreckers and get a filler neck off a diesel hilux of your choice.
Step two. Drive home have a couple of cans. And remove the junk factory filler and chuck it in the bin. Fit hilux filler neck and cap.
Step three. Have a few more cans and forget about ever loseing another drop of diesel again.
This is what I did and have never looked back if you want pics of how I did it let me know
