Just make sure it is empty and dry it out in the sun for a bit, leave the cap open but on so air can circulate through it but dust not fall in.
Is there anything that should be done to a water jerry if it's going to be stored in the shed for a while without being used? i.e. should it be completely emptied our and dried? Or should something be put in it to stop mould or some other growth?

I'm assuming it's a plastic jerry. Before I reuse our plastic containers I just give them a good rinse through with Milton solution - from Woolies for a few bucks.

I generally just drain mine after the event and then fill with a Milton's tab in each the day before I go camping again. Then drain and flush that water before filling with clean drinking water.
I've only had a few people die on my trips ;-)
Miltons for me after each and every use . If I am storing it for a while then I tie a cloth over the top so that it dries out thoroughly before I put the cap back on. Miltons and a good rinse again when I bring it back into use.

Never used this Miltons stuff.
Im a keen homebrewer,I clean my 4 x 20 lt with the pink steri after use and again before I use them, after a good rinse they are fine.

In my 30+ yr experience just empty them and put the caps on lightly (assuming you're keeping them in a shed, etc) refill out of a tap, no probs ever.
One thing you really have to watch if going on a serious (i.e. you are relying on the water to live) is the integrity of white plastic 10 or 20 litre containers.
If they have been in the sun too long they can just shatter on a trip or job. Best advice with those is to give them a serious flex test before filling. Especially the whole top third. If they don't flex (or do crack ) ) recycle.
cheers, DL
Yeah, I second that. I had a 10L white plastic container that I thought would survive just one more Nullarbor trip, but unfortunately didn't! Luckily we only lost a bit of water as we noticed it at a rest stop after some heavy corrugations. Needless to say that container was used next.
Very similar stuff is the Miltons ... just designed to sterilise baby bottles, etc.
Best part about home brewing, since I do too ... you can get fresh wort in 15L food grade containers ... excellent water bottles for camping after the beer magic has been done, and most even have a thread that you can screw a tap into. My shower pump even fit's into the top opening.
Five fit perfectly across the back of my roof rack, so you could stack rows of them if needs be, if you are OK with the C o G issues.
I've had some for quite a few years now and are as good as new. But I do store them out of the weather and sun..... and since I have quite a supply, replacing them with newer ones is not an issue.
Cheers,
Kev.
