Keep the Nissan
Hi all, just wondering about your collective thoughts on this.
I'm planning in about 3 years doing extensive trip around northern Aust, mainly NT & WA, plus other trips too. Not quite in grey nomad league, but working on it. Maybe (most likely) towing off-road camper trailer. Other gentler trips towing current caravan (1750kg ATM). Now I have to say I have a 4.2 Diesel GQPatrol, but having had a D1 V8 manual in the past, I really want to get back to a D1 or D2 pref V8.
So what I'm asking is this;
1. Do you think a D1 or D2 is appropriate for all of this?
2. Obviously it must be reliable; can one really be reliable in these situations?
3. Who has actually covered these areas in a D1 or D2 v8, and how did you go for fuel?
4. What would be required mods?
5. anything else you feel I should know?
Really would appreciate any comments and suggestions.

Thanks Damien. Very tempting, and I probably will, but really would like a Disco again, and hence would want to use it. Let's face it, the GQ is a bit agricultural in comparison.
You might have to suggest your proposed budget.... That will affect what options you have.
Sounds like a P38 Range Rover is what you are looking for!

But in all seriousness, I'd happily do loads of remote area touring in mine - in fact, I've not been towed from anywhere, but towed a classic rangie home from Cape York last year, a Nissan from Maytown to Cairns, etc.
It's not often you see a P38 towing something else, so it did my ego some good!
A solid preventative maintenance regime is all you need.

Any of the vehicles would be up to it, it's the maintenance regime which is going to be key but range & availability of fuel would be not far behind.
As for any mods... Keep it simple. Steering guard, raised air intake, extended breathers and recovery points/roo bar would be the main things. Then it's going to be very much personal choice for the layout of the interior.

You stated you want to do remote travel and you prefer your Disco to be a V8, but it obviously is not a necessity.
I would therefore strongly suggest the option of choosing a Diesel as it not only gives you a better mileage for the amount of fuel carried, Diesel fuel is also safer to carry along than petrol.
If you still want to go V8, both of your choices will do the trick (as far as I can see), the D2 giving you some more interior space, but even some more gizmos that can play off.

X2. I've done a fair bit of remote area travel for both work & play & in my opinion "Remote=Diesel". If something does go bang, with a diesel you will perhaps have a chance of cannibalising or even borrowing something off an old cattle station wreck, with a petrol....Nuht!

Yep, a diesel D1 or D2 would be the go. Either would easily tow a camper trailer.
We've been to quite a few of the areas you mentioned in our D1 300Tdi towing our Aussieswag camper trailer.
Maintenance, preparation and a good suspension and tyres are the key issues I would think.
You don't need a thousand mods, but I do like my rear Detroit auto locker - simple and effective, particularly when towing and the weight of the trailer holds the rear down while the locker keeps it moving through the goop.
I also plan to install a 45 litre second fuel tank (plus 89 litre standard tank) to extend range between fillups to about 12-1300 kms. You won't get that with a petrol V8.
