No CDL in sand?

Had an opportunity this weekend to see first hand what a big difference CDL makes in sand. We had a Disco without CDL in the group and although he handled most of the Stockton dunes .. there were times where he just couldn't go any further. Got himself bogged a few times when the sand got really soft ... I tried to run the defender through there and sure as hell .. I was struggling without CDL .. as soon as I engaged .. no worries! Anybody else found the same thing in soft sand???

Although the Disco did redeem himself .. twice snatching out the 80 Series Landcruiser in the group. Some pics below:

Stockton is great this time of year ... not so hot.

and yes....you will get further with two wheels driving rather than just one...
also thats where cross axle lockers come in handy...

did everyone air down for the sand driving?

Yup ... air down to 16psi (Stauns) ... the 80 series landcruiser did not .. must have thought this is too easy ... so he got bogged ... aired down to about 18psi .. and got bogged again

Next time you hit the heavy sand, pull the ABS fuse. This disables the traction control and makes a huge differance in the soft stuff.

I have been told that, not that i have ETC, but most of the mags say the ETC works against you in soft sand, there should be a button to turn it off. Matt

The D3 has the Sand setting in the Terrain Response (only ever tried it once out at Werribee 4*4 park which was more small stones than beach sand) but also there is a switch on the dash to turn off the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) that can work against forward progress.
So it looks like LR have now taken that into account.
