    Lee Bogs a Falklands Digger

On the 21st February 2006, Lee Clement was going to do a bit of ground work around the Gun Club at Phillips Point near Stanley in the Falkland Islands.
He borrowed a rather large digger and instead of taking it on the formed, ballasted track decided to go offroad, through the peat bank, thinking it would be quicker to get there .

He didn't think much of the first drop, it got a bit soft he said

it got a bit boggy, so he throught to himself, better turn around and go on the road

OOps does anyone know how deep this peat bank is

I know said Bill, the tojo recovery vehicle can get anything japanese out of a bog, oops I am having trouble too

    Is it snorkel time yet,

    this might work

Lee then asked how many more machines could he get into the bog before, more of the town turned up to see what was going on ,

    there are more to come

After a short break and a bit of head scratching he thought, get a smaller one to dig the bigger one out , because the small one isn't working, don't you love japanese off road vehicles,

but something happened, the bog got deeper, and softer,

someone through me a lifepreserver!! I think its going down

Lee decides discretion is the better part of valour, abandon ship or machine in this case

Oh no, lee don't do it its only a machine, even though its not yours

    Its nearly out

Think anyone noticed, no mate its only sunday its really cold, only half the town is here

Just a quick blast with the gerny and no one will know, now about the bits you lost,

and so the saga of the sinking digger comes to an end,
to this date the depth of the peat bank has not been established, 19ft and then onto bedrock was talked about, well it was more that 19ft and still going down.

Lee's utmost embarrassment isthe whole world saw the photos the first time around and now I am showing them for the second time, by then he will have gotten onto the site.
He does visit Victoria occasionally so keep an eye out for him.

The peat is funny stuff, you can walk or drive over it all day, but when you break the surface, well you start to sink. hats why there are so many unexploded shells over there, hit a peat bog and stopped nothing hard to set the detonator off. The entry holes are in most of the bogs I walked over.
funnily enough most of the argy stuff was off the peat on the ridge lines, the yellow mog in the photo is lees thats a 'found' ex argy truck.( or so I was told) I saw it nearly go under at the range with a load of targets on it.
The mines, actually float through the peat, most of the minefields have an average 2 -3 metres buffer zone past the known boundary because of the movement. I saw an anti-veh mine sitting on the surface next to a soggy patch of peat. So you have to be careful where you tread near the minefields.
