    Question Defender 130 chassis strength

    Hi there,

I am new to the forum and am looking at a Defender 130 however I have heard that some of them had the potential to develop cracks in the chassis.

Is there any truth to this shall I say rumour?

    Thanks

I've got an ex-Telstra 130 Crew Cab that's had a pretty hard life by all accounts, and no chassis cracking on it at all. Telstra beefed their chassis up a bit to try to stop these problems.

Some have had chassis cracks in their 110s (or was it the early Discovery IIs?).

There have been a few threads (quite old now) so a search might dig up something.

    G day all

I have a 130 and it had chassis cracks on both sides at the point where the dual cab end and the chassis starts to sweep up. I had it repaired in Kunnunurra and hopfully it will be fine. I looked at another blokes in KNX and it was cracked in exactly the same place. His had had an extremely hard life by the look of it. Mine I bought second hand and at a guess I reckon it carried a big load around on the roads about Alice Springs as it was sold there. Plenty of corrugations, to much air in the tyres, big load something has to give.

    Cheers Hagus

Any chassis can crack given the right circumstances, but there is no history of cracks on 110 (or 90 or 120) chassis. The 130 has not only a substantially higher rated load, but a lot more room to fit a bigger overload, as the increased wheelbase all goes into loadspace plus more overhang, and it would seem the chassis may not have been beefed up enough for this.
