I was reading the latest 4X4 Australia (the one with the new Defender review) and there is an article summarising the 4X4 of the year coming up in early 2008. Based on the criteria I actually think the new Defender has a shot at winning!
The assessment is based on five criteria:
Value - for around $50K the Fender is actually excellent value for money. Big & solid with a/c, TC, ABS, all standard and only the Kia Sorrento or Jeep Wrangler are cheaper.
Breaking Ground - New engine specific power output, anti-stall and the existing TC are ahead of just about every other vehicle being considered.
Built Tough - Can't think of any other that comes close, maybe the 76 series Cruisers.
Doing the Job - It's absolutely fit for purpose, who can argue?
Bushability - Again only the 76 series Cruiser can lay any similar claim to being as capable out of the box.
Yes, I have a totally biased opinion but surely only the 76 series Cruiser is any real competition. Other models up for consideration include:
Kia Sorrento (bleaghh!)
Jeep Wragler Unlimited Rubicon & CRD (Meh!)
Landcruiser 200 series TDV8 & Sahara (may win, but shouldn't because it's ugly as sin and not really that special for an 'all new' model)
Landcruiser 76 series wagon & troopie (likely winner but too expensive)
Hummer H3 (could be a surprise but cheap & nasty)
Range Rover Vogue & Sport TDV8s (sport has already won two years ago)
Could be interesting...

How can any 4WD win 4WDOTY without airbags in 2007??? That incudes the new LC commercial range.
I reckon the big winners this year will be the RRS TDV8 or the LC200.
Cheers

I wanna see it for my self.
You are all dreamin'.200 series will will everything for the next 12 months.Toyota advertisement money will see to it. Pat
I know that is what most people expect, but going over the evaluation criteria I think the competition is a lot more open.
How does the LC200 really stack up on Value, and Innovation?
Me too.
See above... nothing to do with Value and Innovation. $85,000 LC200 GXL I reckon will win and even the Tojo owners up here are finding that price tag hard to swallow.
Of course there's another contender - Hummer H3
But given Land Rover Australia's marketing abilities... they haven't a chance.
