    the proverbial may hit the fans over baby restraints!

    hi all
    i like many on here have been trying to get someone at rover to explain how you fit a baby restraint legally & safely to a defender (110 in my case)

    Why despite there being an ADR ruling saying that all vehicles that designate 51% of their capacity to people (eg. 5 seater defenders) and there fore are rated a MC rating(on compliance plate) have to have fitted baby restraint anchor points are there none on any of the defenders up to the new model( 2007/8).

    i have taken this to the federal body who administer the ADR rules & they are also very interested in why this seems to be the case.
    what i need is for some deefer owners to check to see:

    1. do you have a genuine factory designated restraint anchor point?

    2. does your owner manual say that you have one & where?

    3. what designation( if any! mine doesn't appear to have been filled in funnily enough.) the compliance plate has stamped on it. passenger vehicles should have MC stamped into them.

    if you can let me know on here i can reffer him to the info & he is talking about doing something to help us without having to pay a fortune to have engineers design & compliance something that should have been there in the first place!

    I thought people had got legal ADR points installed on here. You just need it to be engineer approved? And that only costs about 130 bucks I thought.

    I don't have my owners manual nearby but I'll check it when I do.

    there is no standard restraint mount in a defender.
    the manual doesnt say there is but it hints as an optional bar
    Urmmmm the defender is a utility vehicle untill you fit it out for 7 seats (can you see the carpet in the rear loadspace?)

    whats carpet got to do with it ......we had carpet in the rear of our 90

    i don't want to be pedantic about it

    but as it is the safety of my kids & the insurance on the vehicle is void if it's dodgied up, i reckon it's important to get it right.
    apparently it was no hassle on the discovery i own.
    also they bring them in as a passenger vehicle which means they have to play by the rules.
    i've had the truck at a registered fitters all day trying to work out how they can fit a crab bar to it legally.
    ths is the suggested engineer option & the cost before they found out they couldn't do it was going to be $650.00

    Perhaps it's the caffine, (wayyyy too much good stuff today) but I'm thinking there is a certain sense of irony putting a child restraint into a Defender without installing a basic ROPS, at the same time.

    Here's a link to the new Hino range of trucks

    there is a crew cab capable of sitting 7 (and it doesn't mention child restraints)

    If you look at the carrying capacity of a defender and then calculate how much of that is taken up by passengers (max 7 at 80kg each) that works out at 56%, however if you bought the 5 seater that's only 40%. So why would LR have to supply it with child restraints?

    Brisvans in Moss st installed 2 in the rear of the cab of our Mitsubishi Canter, should be able to work something out.

    Upon asking dealers about it a while ago (8 years) the advice at the time was an optional bar across the back of the seats. As far as I'm aware the defender is subject to a different set of adr's as it is considered a light truck not a passenger wagon. Even my 130Dc is registered with Queensland Transport as a wagon no matter how many times I've tried to have it changed. Defenders don't fit into pidgeon holes so it gets put in the too hard basket.
