Sydney/Cape York/Cairns

Barbara arrives in Sydney on Monday and wants to go up to tip of Cape York. Will throw her out at Cairns to fly to Sydney so she she can catch flight back to UK (Back to work for her to keep me in the manner I have becomed accustomed to! )

So what is a reasonable time scale to do trip (via Old Tele Road)?

Have been told not to follow coast line up due to holiday makers on coast road.

Any suggestions on route from Sydney and time scale?

IF push come to shove what is a reasonable quick time from tip of Cape York to Cairns? (Don't want her missing her flight!)

Regards

Brendan

Hey Leeds.

A week would get you from the tip to Cairns via the OTL, but it would be quite full on, and you wouldnt have a huge amount of time free.

Depends how quick you want to go.

We did Brisbane to Cairns in a day and a bit, Sydney to Brisbane would be a full day I suppose.

The OTL is pretty easy going, or at least it was a Month ago.

Cheers
Pete.

well for you to be comfortable it will be 3 days to Cairns. Out to Dubbo, Roma, Charters towers and Cairns. Then it will depend on what you want to see. I would recommend 3 weeks from Sydney to the top and back to cairns to put swmbo back on the plane. Can be done quicker, but why travel all the way from the UK to drive past everything to see. Not only that the corrogations will kill you as I doubt you would have seen these sort of roads back home. 4 weeks would be better.
Check the Queensland reports section, as there are 3 recent Cape york trips posted by PSimpson7, Mudnut and Grizzly Adams.

I don't think we will be rushing, I have a natural love of going the pretty way and am very easily distracted.
But under no circumstances can I be late back to work given that I went away for a week in May to meet Bren in Singapore and I am still off work and we break up for the hols today.
Just wish I could spend as long as His Nibs is but I suppose I should consider myself lucky that I get 6 weeks hols in the summer.

Inland Sydney to Cairns is 2400km and if you go inland route not alot to stop for really...

Then take a leisurely trip all the way to the tip.

For the run back to Cairns, well the development road is in a sweet condition at moment. Friends from Cooktown just came and visited us while working in the straits, they did Cooktown to Seisia in 8 driving hours... so add 3.5 to Cairns makes one long day

Depends what you want to see and do.

Cape York - Cairns is easily doable in 3 days.

The OTR is a doddle. It's more like driving some of the byways back home.

Just remember that there's LOADS of corrugations!!!!

PS... Go to the chip shop in Cooktown. It's probably the best fish & chips in the whole of Oz!
