Expedition spares : LR Defender Td5 110

By the time we leave on our overland trip, which might be for 40,000 / 50,000 km., our LR Defender 110 Td5 (2.5 litre diesel engine) CSW will have done about 60,000 km. It has been well taken care of and serviced every 10,000 km.

I plan to carry a well-stocked supply of spare parts, including what will be needed for routine services. I would like to know “what might be likely to break first” i.e. what are the essential non-routine parts we should take, which parts would be “a very good idea to carry” and which parts “could well be needed”??? I’m assuming, which I think is a realistic assumption, that if and when we break down, this will not be near a Landrover dealership.

One thing I’m wondering about is the suspension. We are only two people, but I envisage carrying a fairly heavy load and wonder if the suspension will be OK carrying this day-in, day-out.

All advice appreciated.

Suspension? What can go on you? Spring, possible but unlikely, shock absorber maybe! bushes? I was on one trip and one of the vehicles (disco 1) pulled a shock apart, the owner was carrying a replacement.

You should concentrate on bits that will stop your vehicle. I am pretty sure someone said that a crank angle sensor will prevent your TD5 from firing up. If you do a search I recall that this question has been asked before I found this thread that I recalled and from there you will find a link to a list of things put together by Blknight.aus.

criticals for the td5...

all the sensors (although only the crank angle and TPS are the real show stoppers)
the serpentine belt
the idlers.
a spare set of cooling system hoses.

providing you dont have a dual battery system all of the hoses and sensors will fit into the battery box under the passangers seat.

On the list of nice to haves are a fuel pump and ECU.

theres plenty of other things to consider like a bolt to replace the water sensor/drain bung on the fuel filter, bulbs, filters, oil, coolant...

Idlers are the sprung tensioners which the serpentine belt runs over to keep a preset tension on the belt. Stops it going all floppy and falling off.

Our intended route is from Oman to the UAE and Saudi Arabia (or-if not possible-via Iran to Turkey; if that's not possible, rethink); Jordan, Syria, Turkey, via Europe to Britain; then to Canada, U.S.A., Mexico and Central America, South America.

Don't have a website at present.
