well, Barabara Anne Etiquette (RN) Rtd.to give her her full Name,was born in Wigan,Lancashire,the first daughter to mill workers Doris and Stanley Etiquette,educated by the coalman in there coal house once he'd finished his round,taught her stacking and filling the sacks full(nutty slack and dust at the bottom),kicking the tailboard shut with one push and finally on her fourth birthday to drive the lorry(a Thorneycroft Trusty) EED 587.
Following the outbreak of WW2 she volunteered for the Royal Navy as a stowker(from her coal delivery knowledge)still only aged 9 lying about her age telling the billiting officer she was 12,was awarded a medel in late 1943 for catching a torpedo that had entered one of the coal bunkers fired from a German sub(U112)and putting it under her blanket thus saving her ship the SS Ho Har,boarding up the hole in the hull with dried egg powder boxes,the following morning giving the torpedo to the gunnery Mid shipman for his collection. On being demobbed from the Merchant Navy she stowed away in a box marked Darwin(she thought Darwin in Lancashire not to far from Wigan would get a free trip home)only to wake up in Darwin NT. here she made most of her mistake giving etiquette lessons to all who would listen,latterly here on AULRO forums but at her age thought she would hand the task over to a younger member,being............... |
