they cant replace the discovery with a larger 7 seat freelander. Im assuming it will have low range capability and the same off road prowess as the D3-D4.

Now that the Freelander is Kluger sized they need to make a new model land rover in the 30k price range to compete with the Rav, Captiva, Subaru, Honda, Suzuki and X-trail.

I don't see why they can't!

Edit: The article did mention several Freelander lengths - I guess that is to compete with those vehicles you mentioned (end of edit)

I recall scouse hinting something a few months back that smells like this.

With Defender replacement (project Icon) using disco 3/4 platform, they may be planning for Icon variants to encompass all of the offroad capable vehicles, with RR and Freelander variants for luxo, SUV sections of the markets.

At this stage we can only speculate what the all new Icon will be like, but I can imagine versions that would appeal to the section of the disco buying market that venture off road.

If they get this right, it could well be the best direction for the future of the company.

As much as I hate to say it making the next defender on the D3-4 platform is the best choice and the LRX is the new small LR.The seven seat freelander will be like the suzuki thing.I can't imagine the discovery will be axed. Pat

To me the hole in the Land Rover range has been and remains the lack of a competitor in the Hilux / Navara segment. I realise that a decision was made to move away from work vehilces with the Discovery however seems odd as there is a very large market for this type of vehicle. Think it is perhaps due to the very UK / Europe / USA sales orientation of the company over the last 20 years.
