how much bigger will a 305/75/16 look beside a 285/75/16? how are they measured?

305/285 is the width in mm, 75 is the aspect ratio, ie the height of the tyre is 75% of the width. All sizes are nominal and will vary to greater or lesser degree, between brands/models.

So all things being equal, theoretically a bit over 1/2" difference.

is good for what you want I think, also

and I find
