County

Thanks for all the replies, which have been extremely helpful and your warm welcome to the forum. I have attached a couple of pics of the County, which hopefully will shed some light on the vehicle. There is a new compliance plate on the bulkhead, which confirms that the engine has been replaced with a diesel Isuzu. The original certification compliance plate delineates 6/80, which I presume is the date?.

Certainly appears to be a S3 Stage 1 in County trim. Nice one mate, it looks to be in rather good condition. All you need is a bull bar now....Brian

Nice unit and I agree looks like a series LR, but in any case looks very clean.
Have a look if it have leaf springs and which kind of breaks at the front, disc or drums?
Cheers

County

Thank you for all the replies and great help that you have given me in identifying my Land Rover, without your help I would still be scratching my head as this is my first Land Rover. I checked the front brakes, which are shoes, would it be worth upgrading the fronts to disc or is this not possible. I have some restoration to carry out to the interior and particularly need a dashboard, any suggestions where I might be able to source one would be well appreciated. Many thanks from Penguin Tasmania

It is quite clearly a Stage 1 Series 3. These came with a 3.5 V8 but in Australia only also with the Isuzu (although it is quite possible yours is a conversion - wouldn't be the only one).

The grille is not original, that is off a 110 or a Defender - the original was a plain wire mesh. Similarly, the headlight surround is off a 110 or Defender. There may be other 'updated' bits as well.

While it is possible to convert to front discs, in my view it is not worth it as it will be either a lot of work or quite expensive or both, and properly maintained, the brakes fitted are adequate, just take a bit more maintenance than do the discs (for example, adjusting every service).

Except for the engine and drive train, and the front and bulkhead area, most of the parts are standard Series 3.

John

This example is a prime argument against the common practice of using the trim level "County" to refer to pre-Defender 110 Landrovers!
