Hannibal Camping Gear for a Defender

Hi All,

I am new to the forum. I have a 2009 defender and am looking at getting the Hannibal Tourer Tent with Annex. I am planning on getting a Hannibal Awning also. Has anyone got any reviews/advice. I would be keen to hear from any defender owners with this configuration.

Thanks for the help

My suggestion would be to question if you will use the lower tent.
I bought mine (I've a HJT18 (1.8mtr Jumbo touring tent) on my GU with a HA02 (2.4mtr awning) on a Hannibal rack) from Justin when he was at Hannibal (Thanks Justin!)
I spent 6 weeks in mine up north for my honeymoon last year. LOVE IT
But I've never used the lower tent section.
I'm currently building a trailer to shift the tent onto for longer stays (a roof top is a PITA for base camping) and I think I'll make use of the lower tent then.
The tent with the jumbo fly is awesome though and the additional cover from the fly saves getting wet! (even better once I worked out how the ridge pole worked... I have to say that is a **** design by hannibal)
The awning is awesome and strong as they come. The only thing through is that being free standing is that it does require a bit of work to clip the ends in. My GU has 4-5" of spring lift which probably puts the awning at similar height to a Defender and its a bit of a struggle - I actually bought a little step ladder to assist with setting it up.

The other thing is that a tent larger than 1.2 will mount side ways - which makes undoing the cover a challenge. On the patrol I don't mind as its just a bush pig and I stand on the bonnet. But I wouldn't want to have to do that on my D3 HSE...
In saying this I love the additional room over a standard 1.2 tent but if the plan hadn't been to eventually put it on a trailer the whole time then I think a 1.2 would have been a better option and would have left me with much more roof rack space and easier setup.

Quality wise - IMO you simply cant go past the Hannibal or the Howling moon. Both are leagues above the chinese tents. Rack wise I'm not entirely convinced the Hannibal is any better than the competition but I do like the light weight of the aluminium (especially when I have the additional weight of the larger tent!)

When I was up north I had a lot of people with cheaper tents asking to check out my Hannibal and several made the comment that they wish they spent the extra - one couple had been touring for 6 months and their tent did a zip within the first 2 months and had bowed the tent hoops in a storm.
