    4bd1 versus 4bd1T

    hi Chaps,

Im looking into an isuzu 4bd1. Can this engine have a turbo put on safely or is it internally different to its Turbo cousin?

As JC said, they are (slightly) different internally, but you can safely turbo a 4BD1 without long term consequences.

Main functional differences - the 4BD1T block has:
1.) a nitrided crankshaft (almost indestructable)
2.) oil squirters under pistons to help keep them cooler (means you can squeeze a bit more power out of it if you so wish)
    3.) higher capacity oil pump
4.) block casting has a couple of additional ports for oil supply / return (for the turbo)
5.) 4BD1T engines are also configured with a few specific parts (a rocker cover that has an integrated engine bre ather, oil return port on the sump, dipstick tube that clears the exhaust manifold etc)

There are also camshaft differences (depending on the year of manufacture), but the N/A engines eventually switched over to the same cam. Other than that, they're pretty much the same.

    Cheers

As offender90 just said there the main differences don't listen to the petrol boys if they try and influence you otherwise when turboing the motor these motors are in there own league!!!

Anyone able to help with a rough estimate of cost for turning a 4BD1 into a 4BD1T?

Can be done for as little as $1500, or as much as $6k, depending on parts you're using, how much DIYing you're willing / able to do, and whether you're intercooling / upgrading other parts.

What is it that you're looking to do?

    I'm looking at the costs of dropping a 4BD1T into a 96 130CC

Trying to work out the best bang for buck gearbox option, if I went with an R380 - I'd need to have mine rebuilt to deal with the extra torque, but between the rebuild and getting a 4bd1>r380 adapter it'd probably still be significantly cheaper than getting an MSA > LT230 adapter made

It's probably cheaper in the long run to start with a 4BD1T (as opposed to a 4BD1) I guess - I'll call a few more people in Melbourne for quotes.

Would be intercooling, I gather upgrading to a VNT turbo probably isn't worth the cost either on the 3.9?

If you're starting from scratch and can find a 4BD1T, definately go the 4BD1T option.

If you don't have a gearbox yet, an MSA 5 or 6 speed box would probably be most preferable from strength / longevity perspective. They also come with PTOs attached, so you have the option of running a hydraulic winch setup if you so wish. There is no reason LT85s / R380s shouldn't give you a few hundred thousand kms behind a 4BD1T provided you treat them with respect. LT95's are a bit more forgiving in that regard, but are only a 4 speed box.

Intercooling parts will probably set you back $1000 to $1800, depending on size and quality of IC, hoses, clamps and piping you use (mine came out to around $1500 from memory, of which the intercooler was only about $300).

Dont know much about VNT's but you can get plenty of power out of the standard intercooled turbo with the fuel screw wound out.

Out of curiosity, what sort of prices are you being quoted for 4BD1s Vs 4BD1Ts, and what condition are they in?

The Grubb on here makes a MSA to LT230 adapter, i have this in my LSE. good bit of gear.. So go buy a motor and box from a truck, the grubbs adapter and stick it in.
