looks like a 4bd1 to me, i dont see a turbo set up in those pictures. looks like the engine could do with a bit of reconditioning though. id be enquiring about the turbo itself to see if he could send some images and information on the condition of it.

The third photo that shows a crank case breather. That is the same as my 4bb1 motor. Rocker cover as you noted is not from that motor. Would not of thought motors later than mine would still have a crank case breather. Also the intake manifold is the same as mine.

Depends on the price. Definitely a 4bd1 in a stage1. Even has the cartridge type oil filter. How many miles? These engines are only looking at a rebuild when you start getting low compression. Could be a diamond in the rough that would come up lovely with a clean up job.

It's an NA engine, but the rocker cover might be from a turbo motor, or late NA.
It's got the NA crank case breather, so the breather out of the rocker cover is extra.
Ask him to check the large numbers on the driver's side of the block just above the sump, this will tell you what year it was made.

Mike Vine in QLD did/does turbo conversions that fit the turbo on the drivers side, however it does not seem to have that conversion and the breather connected to the intake would kill the seals quickly if it was a turbo.

He didn't know what I was talking about when I asked him about the rear doors (early 110 wind up windows) so he might not know much about the vehicle. Didn't want to talk with me for long in the phone either so asking him to poke around looking for casting numbers on the left hand side below the manifold might be stretching the friendship. I could get the engine number from him probably- is this going to tell us anything?

However in terms of 'diamond in the rough'- a dirty engine tells no lies so it's likely ok. Electric winch on that steam engine cowcatcher bullbar. Nothing else fancy- brakes normal drums no long range tank, no overdrive or PTO etc. Pity- I was getting excited for a minute there.

It might be a good buy for someone not too far away though. I've had two stage ones and they do grow on you.

Could be a 4bc2, 4be1 or several others. Model is cast into the block to know for sure.
