I just dropped in and measured up the 4HE1 at Andrew's work. THANKS ANDREW!!!

I will post up the pics later - but an interesting observation - the pump looks the same as a 4BD1 (and all mechanical operation / minimal electrics).

OK - here are the pics!

Overall dimensions (40 cm ruler in each image):

And a few closeups of the injector pump and turbo:

As you can see, the biggest issue is that everything is on the opposite side compared to the 4BD1.

Where is the starter?
Some of the 4H engines have it mounted on the gearbox, protruding forward to the ring-gear. There's plenty of space for that in a truck, but not much in a landrover.

The engine didn't have a starter, and I only thought about it when Andrew and I were outside. I can't remember there being a spot for the starter - so maybe you are right.

Changing the engine bellhousing would be a PITA, as the head bolts to it, and the cam gears are at the back of the motor (the reason the IP is on the opposite side). This also means no gear driven PAS pump

Rough dimensions are:
800 mm pulleys to flywheel
800 mm sump to tappet cover
600 mm turbo to air inlet

Will have to measure the 4BD1T later...

Btw - the sticker price is $11500+GST

Btw - specs are here:
4.75 l
109 kw @3200
400 Nm @1800
http://www.isuzu.co.nz/Engines/4he1_T.htm

And the intercooled version:
(not sure if this is the same as the 4HE1-TC - Andrew???)
http://www.isuzu.co.nz/Engines/4he1_xn.htm
463 Nm @1300

EDIT 4BD1(T), ROUGH measurements:
750 mm pulleys to flywheel
750 mm sump to tappet cover
700 mm turbo to air inlet (I don't have a genuine turbo)
Anyone disagree?

So, the 4HE1 looks quite close, and should squeeze into a 110 - especially with the new bonnet.
wrt the exhaust, it looks like you could run it out the DS wheel well, (like the 4BD1(T), just the opposite side) without interfering with anything - but it would be very close to the brake lines.

The diameter of the flywheel (housing) and the starter look like the biggest issues...

Dimensions stated in IDE2140 are:
4BD1 - 795 L, 701 W, 720 H
4BD1-T - 806 L, 672 W, 785 H

According to the 4H engine workshop manual, the power steering pump is located on the right side, in front of timing gear case.

Edit; and the starter is at the left rear of the bellhousing. You can see the bolt holes in the flywheel housing in 1 of the pics - the bolts pass through the bellhousing and screw into the flywheel housing.

Thanks John - so the starter sits directly behind the injector pump?

And the PAS pump is on the opposite side of the engine from the IP? (gear driven?). Can't say I noticed it there, and IRC Andrew said it is belt driven on that model? However I could be imagining it.

I will double check it. Will pull the engine out from the wall and get some pics of the other side.

Yes.
Yes.
I'm only going by what it says in the manual, which covers the 4H engine family (as far as I can tell, differences are identified and no differences to the arrangement of the timing gears were noted).
