    ving the radiator backward on a 4BD1 county?

    Hi all,

    I'd like to move the radiator backwards (towards the engine) by approximately 1 inch to fit an intercooler in front of it.

    Any reason I shouldn't?

    There's currently 10cm+ between the fan and the radiator, and although the fan is belt driven, could it deflect this far without breaking if it gets immersed in water?




    Any thoughts appreciated.

    I have not seen it done, but looking at it I can't see a major problem. The radiator shroud will need to be modified to clear the crankshaft pulley and the p/s pump, and possibly the alternator. It would not be very feasible if you had the aircon compressor where mine is, but that is not standard. I don't think the fan blades bending to hit the radiator is likely to be a problem, at least unless you do deep wading, and even then an inch I don't think will be a problem.

    I would consider very carefully the new mounts you make for the radiator and intercooler, as these are quite heavy and need to be somewhat protected from vibration.

    Bojan,
    Moving the rad would mean altering the mounting brackets. The bottom ones are part of the chassis. It might even mean cutting hoses etc etc. I'm guessing you are having trouble making room for the I/C with the available space the non-A/C grill allows. It might be easier to get an A/C grill panel to gain some space.

    If you do do anything, remember that the fan blades work most efficiently when about half the blade is outside the shroud.

    You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    I would modify / extend the existing mounts to fit. Vibration isolation would utilise the same rubber mounts as existing.

    The existing bottom mount is made of Yx45x2.5 RHS (Y > 60) steel section, and is cut back at approx 45 degree engle (see pic below)



    I'd extend the existing mount so the back edge is vertical and drill another hole for the isolation mount in the extended section. This mount has to be strong as its supporting the weight of the radiator + water in it.

    For the top mounts, I'd cut both mounts along the faint line in the pic below, and weld the left end to the right mount and right end to the left mount (so they point backwards). The holes for rubber mounts would be in the same orientation (parallel to the radiator) and one inch back from original position.



    As the top mount is only used to locate the radiator, it would still be strong enough to restrict lateral movement.

    Alternatively I may use the front of an AC county instead to give me more room as Murray suggested.

    I've already got one but was hoping to have more room between the grille and the bullbar, asI thought it will make it more challenging to fit a PTO winch.
