Isuzu 6bd1 into Jeep

Hi, I'm putting a 6bd1 into a 1963 Jeep. I have a few issues that maybe similar to a Landy.


The motor came with a 6 speed gearbox, how do I set up the gear selection?
By the way I got the motor, gearbox & chassis for only $700!
The next pic shows how high the gearbox bellhousing mounts are, I'm ok with modifying the floor to use these mounts but does anyone have any clever ideas for a better way to mount the box?

Due to money, the transfercase will be added at a later date, I'm thinking a divorced case, any suggestions? Preferably something common in Oz.
The radiator will be mounted on the large rear bumper and eventually I will use some of the hot air to heat the rear tank for chip oil.
Here's a pic of the old motor coming out...man did that make me smile!

Will be a beast when finished.

Have a look in the "crash course" thread for pics of Dougal's shifter setup. However the easiest would be to fit a cable shift gear lever from a car. John (Bush65) may post pics of his setup if you ask nicely).

I used a cable shift set-up from a Toyota Corolla. But one from an Isuzu truck might be better for you.

Your box is a bit different to mine, but the 2 levers are similar.

With my box, the lever on top has 4 positions. The cable that extends/contracts when the gear lever is moved left or right, connects to this lever. In neutral the lever rotates forward or back a small distance with no spring resistance (these are 2 of the positions, one for 2nd, 3rd the other for 4th, 5th).
Move this lever back against spring resistance for rev, 1st.
Move the lever forward against spring resistance for 6th.

The lever on the side has 3 positions, and the cable that extends/retracts when the gear lever is moved forward or back is connected to it. The middle position is neutral and the forward back positions will select the gear, depending on the position of the top lever.

The top lever can only be moved when the side lever is in neutral.

You will need to use trial and error to work out your shift pattern and the best way to run the cables, which may be different to mine, but it could be something like:

R 2 4 6
1 3 5

or

1 3 5
R 2 4 6

You can change this with how you choose to route the push/pull cables.

I haven't had anything to do with the 6BD1 and their engine mounts. Those in your pics look the engine could have been originally used as a stationary engine - at least stationary 4BD1's have mounts like that (the 4BD1's for vehicle use don't have mounts on the flywheel housing - instead the rear mounts are on the gearbox).

The 5 speed box I have has this shift pattern

R 2 4
1 3 5

A lot of us here have posted up in your thread on outerlimits, some good ideas there that all still apply.
Can you post up a photo of the back end of the gearbox so we can see where it mounts?

Good to see some one recycling one of these fine engines. They are strong as in a truck and there is heaps of them still going around here.

If you have the room for it a Ford Blitz transfer would get you going. They are mounted separately like a Jap truck transfer. I ran one behind a 318 Dodge with C series running gear in a Series 1 Land Rover And never broke it. Did tear a few uni's out with very hard use though.

That mount set up on the bell housing are very strong but will be noisy in the jeep It would be better to use something like HJ 60 a Land cruiser set up. You would have to fab up a X member under the gear box and an adapter to the gear box to do this. They are cheap to buy and would be strong enough.


Good luck with the project and it will be a good machine when finished.

I'd try and mount the old Dana 20 to it.
They are incredibly strong, even though they are a sliding gear t/case and it will retain the correct centre rear, drivers side front outputs you need.

Love a FSJ, used to have a '70 J3000 with a pantech body as my work truck

Unfortunately this one has been converted to a landcruiser 4-speed and t-case. (I think)

Are you certain that gearbox has 6 forward speeds?

Looking at the front of the gear shift housing on top of the box, I can see what appears to be covers for 3 shift rails. Perhaps there is another that is not evident - 3 rails will only allow selection of 5 forward and 1 reverse gear.

Also it looks a lot shorter than my 6 speed (MXA-6R), but length is hard to judge without a known reference in the picture. Mine is approx 500mm from rear of bellhousing to the surface the brake backing plate bolts onto.

Thanks Dougal,yep I've been getting some great replies from both forums, what a great way to share knowledge. I posted on AULRO as well because so many Landys get Isuzu conversions.
I'll take some more gearbox photos tomorrow. The bellhousing mounts are the only mounts on the gearbox.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll have the motor and box sitting in position.
This weekend will see about 5 blokes kickin in to help. Some favours some for $ or a bit of both.
Warm up the welders!
