anything interesting on your trip to or from Cooma?

what interesting things occured during your trip to and from cooma?

i scored a couple of flat tyres, both front, both appear to be related to poor quality tubes. first, the drivers side front, just as i reached cooma township on thursday morning, so was only doing 60kph and the second on the sydney to newcastle freeway in a twisty winding bit so was only doing 90 kph when it let go.

spotted a p38a doing at least 110 on the federal highway, riding on the bump stops! passenger laid back in the seat out like a light and the driver hanging onto the wheel for grim death it appeared...

anyone else see what looked like an early 30's open wheeler in the storm west of sydney?

talk about brave souls :P

About 60km out of Cooma on the Krawarree road we heard a metallic 'whirring' noise, when I pulled off the road to investigate suddenly realised that I had no power assist for the brakes. It made for a slow and very considered trip into Cooma.

After a quick consult with Justin and a couple of tests, vacuum pump had failed (possibly a broken spring). Luckily the guys from All4x4 spares had one with them (does that tell a story) which I was able to fit Saturday afternoon.

Other than that one of the other guys in our group had a 'fail to proceed in Braidwood' due to no electrics. A quick bypass of the fuel solenoid got him going again, and again thanks to Justin a fix was established (back of the ignition switch had come adrift) using a couple of cable ties.

Only one incident.
Once back in Canberra I was attacked by a Territory. Paj 1 Territory 0. Now waiting for the cops to get back to me over the incident. Guy must have a sore hand after the number of times he punched my window after I locked the doors.

Whats worse than having imobiliser issues at Polo Flats?

A: Having them outside your Mother in Laws house.

but there was another incident

Stopped of for chips and gravy at Goulburn town centre, just a little take away shop.

I ordered $4.50 of chips and gravy and asked for two forks. Big issue with the takeaway lady: "No one fork only"
me: "But there's two of us" I pull back me hand with the cash in it.
takeaway lady: "Bloody blow in's" throws a second fork on the counter.

Bad attitude considering the town is bypassed and the shop was empty. I know $4.50 ain't a lot but still, a fork costs how much?

My trip down was fairly eventless....

Im a bit dissapointed with my efforts down there..

I got a repair/inspect/Adjust job on every major type of rover except a Series III, my count not in any kind of order other than how I remember them and names/owners have been omited as I dont remeber them.

At cooma

cooling system on a SI (faulty Gauge, diagnose only)
clutch slave on a IIA (worst SS resleve Ive ever seen)
Airbag jack up on a rangie (thanks Ron having you on site made locating the required info a snap)
Fuse in a county (no brake lights, corrosion on the fuse contacts allowing voltage but no current)
alternator bearing in a Deefer (diagnose only)
diagnose clutch on a deefer (unable to diagnose without more gear, best guess is its not the hydraulics and hopefully is just the arm pivot)
Diagnose no start on disco (immobiliser/battery combo)
Diagnose mischarging on a FC (poor battery setup allowing 12v side of 12/24v combo to discharge exessively)

and on the way back........

fix a flat on a ducatti
diagnose a failing overdrive in a disco 1 lt77
make and fit a telstra rope fanbelt to bypass a siezed idler in a D1.

Not a bad run. Dad learnt some stuff and got a lot of ideas for how he wants to set up lara

next time someone break a Series III

and again my total fuel economy for the trip from home to home seems to be in the 8k/l region which aint bad given it was a heavy trip down and a fast trip back.

Way to Cooma: Midnight Thursday near Dubbo VERY close encounter with big grey hopper, Love my new Lightforce XGT's

Way Home: Came across a late model Disco 2 at top of Moonbi hills. Overheated on way up, young asian guy said he forgot to check coolant before trip (he didn't have half a clue). I poured half a 20ltr jerry into it and it instantly wet back to normal on gauge. Let it idle up for 10mins and all seemed okay. Told him to get it checked ASAP

Other than that pretty uneventful trip compared to coming across an accident involving a coach and 5 cars in xmas hols with no services yet onscene

Oh, got 9L/100km avg over about 2500kms
