The R380 is the better box IMO but the LT77 isn't too bad. After owning one for a while I can't really fault them although reverse is a PIA spot so I would still choose the 380 in that regard.

The splines on the mainshaft seem to be an issue with early LT77's without any lube on the shaft they just wear out over time. Boofheads at LR though that grease would do the job but were mistaken and seen some LT77's with mainsafts that resembles toothpicks on the output splines

The R380 is stronger, but the LT77 has a nicer shift action.

I have an LT77 in my Rangie.

Well it's about to be gearbox-less (may have sold the LT230/ZF auto) the panels are rough and the guards have been cut to fit 35's on. Engine is tired (has over 400K and still doesn't use oil thankfully) the seats, interior is fair (seats not torn) and half the carpet missing.

Sort of gives you an idea of the condition.

r380

Go for the R380, ask a Dealer to enquire on LR Aus about the warranty boxes they may still have in stock, you didn't hear it from me but they are about $1400-1500 and are brand new. They were brought in as warranty replacements for LT77 boxes in early D1's, they also have/had the shifter which is needed to convert LT77 to R380. I had my D1 3.9 converted and it was the best thing I ever did, the problem with the LT77is it can not handle the "back torque" on the 3-2 downshift.
Cheers

Rushy

ps I deny any knowledge of the pricing and don't ask where I used to work and doing what
