Sounds like The problem is the bearing in the pump has released its grip on the shaft, which causes the shaft as a whole to walk out the front of the pump. it is pressed on during manufacture. A new pump is the best remedy....

My psteer pulley slid forward and damaged the belt and guard (edit: on my 2000MY 4.6 THOR). No single centre bolt is there holding it on despite threads inside the pump shaft. I drifted the pulley back onto the pump shaft with a hammer and some timber and it looked solid and firm. I fitted a new belt but when I started the engine I could see after a few seconds that the pulley was coming forward off the pump shaft again. Pump shaft turned freely by hand.
Can anyone tell me the size and type of the bolt?
Why is it a round interference fit rather than keyed?

Thanks JC, I can see that the pulley creeps forward off the pump shaft, the shaft doesn't seem to be coming out of the pump?
I have added more photos. I have put the pulley back on the pump shaft and installed a 25mm M8 high tensile bolt to hold the pulley on along with a spring washer and two flat washers. Its running and idling fine, and not coming off anymore, but I still don't understand why there's was no bolt there originally.

Errr, sorry I should've read more carefully, thor engine. Yes the pulley should be a tight press fit on the shaft,no bolt required as far as I remember. What you have done will probably help in the short term, but basically the pulley should be a pressfit. Eventually it'll rotate.
Knurling and loctite may work?

Just a quick update, all is going well so far after a couple of days of driving. The bolt seems to be holding, I am a little concerned that the rotation of the pulley and the shaft may work the bolt loose. I still don't see how a woodruff key isn't a better design.

Another update for posterity, after three months it still seems fine. I still think a new pump is in the near future.
