    Arrow PROJECT 4, Dual battery set-up for a Defender ( & other 4x4s )

Hi folks, although this project is primarily aimed at fitting a dual battery system in a Defender, the over all project will pretty well suite any vehicle.

Furthermore, as we proceed with the project, if anybody wants the info being posted here to be expanded to cover over models of vehicles, just ask away.

The project is going to be based around my Dual Battery Controllers, the SC40 and the SC80, BUT with very minor changes, other brands of controllers can be substituted for the SC40 and SC80 and I’m happy to help with info if you have already fitted something else or plan to fit something else.

To get this project up and running, if anybody has already carried out such an installation, could you post info relating to your set-up and likewise, anybody contemplating doing a dual battery install, please post any enquires about possible set-ups and/or your expected needs for a dual battery set-up.

As the project unfolds, I will try to post relevant info on how things work, not just the controllers but thing like why and how batteries charge, reasons for using different cable sizes and how these differences will effect your particular installation. I'll cover the pros and cons of using circuit breakers and fuses and so on.

So if you have any questions, please ask away.

    Cheers.

i have installed a tjm ibs dual battery system into my 2003 defender 90 at the moment it is about to get ripped out and rewired into a new cabinet in the back as you can't fit a second battery under the seat without replacing standard battery or getting another one of the same type ( long skinny suckers) but i have installed one in my brothers Tanami which was a basic Tjm unit no hand held contoller/display which we used 35 square mm flex cable for connections and mounted both batterys under seat on a custom made flat piece of stainless main battery is a optima redtop and second battery is a optima yellow top will take photos and post for more detail and will post photos of mine as i'm putting back in if that helps

I recently found (but lost again) a description of a dual battery installation in a Discovery where the stock battery was replaced by two smaller batteries by heavily modifying the tray. By fitting new controllers, cables and through choice of battery this was supposed to be capable of supplying huge current for winching etc while still holding a reserve for starting. Can you give a simple explanation of battery types and what is needed for a good dual system?

I'll probably be going down this path oneday.

Yes, apart from the length of HD auto wire, how much does the kit cost, I don't think I will have a problem wiring it up (obviously following the instructions)

LR Disco 2, 2002, with the 2nd battery in a SuperCheap, 2nd battery box strapped into the load space.

And what type/make/ etc., of battery would you recommend for the 2nd.

    Deep cycle, whatever that is
    Gell - even more confused

    etc., etc.,

    hey drivesafe.....

from what everyone here tells me.....and from my own experience......

one thing you need to add to your dual battery kits that you dont have.....

and is required by just about anyone fitting a second battery to their landy.....

is a good old fashioned SHOEHORN......!!

or maybe....if there is anyone on here that deals with batteries......
maybe some info on size....as in physical dimensions.....and capacities.....recommended brands....etc......
just to make it easier to know whats what when it comes to batteries....
there is simply too many brands and varieties out there that it just gets so confusing........

Hi ladas, an SC40 & post to anywhere in Oz, with the AULRO discount will set you back $99.

As far as batteries go, I don’t recommend any specific batteries but anybody else with specific info about their own choice of battery can post so others will get an idea of what's available and why people buy what they have.

Having said that, I will tell what batteries NOT to get. In your case and any installation where the battery is to be installed inside the cab, standard wet cell batteries are out. As these batteries gas while being charged, they are not recommended for use for in-cab installations.

    Cheers.

PS, funny Zook, true but still funny.

    dual batts

hey drivesafe, mate i am looking for a dual batt system for my 86 4BD1-T defender 90.

mate i will be using it to play the CD player, and external lighting when the car is off, and installing a fridge and winch in the future.

i have no idea really about dual batt systems apart from what i want to use them for is two different types of system - slow drain and quick drawing power?

    cheers mate

Hi Sam and everybody else, sorry for not following up on this thread sooner but there is just not enough hours in the day.

I have had a chat with X-Box and looked at his fenda.

We have worked out a basic system, as a starting point, for Defenders and it should not only be a fairly simple install but will also be cost effective.

The idea so far is to supply an SC40 and 250 amp battery switch and a small amount of cable with terminals.

The problem is that right at this time both X-Box and myself are flat out with work but as soon as time permits, we will get together, do a trial install and then I will be able to give you all some ideas.

    Cheers.
