Fitting Snorkel to 300 Tdi Defender

Today I started the switch over, thought I might post it up in tutorials to help anyone else attempting it as well

    First things first

Go here and print yourself off a set of instructions

    Safari Snorkel System - SS550HF

(Right down the bottom of the page)

If its coming off one vehicle and going onto another and been there a while get your hands on a can of this

Next step was to pull the old one off

Easy half dozen screws and some nylock nuts. Undo the pipe clamp and your free

Check the seal to see if its broken. Mine was. Also the corrugated piping. Mine had a hole in it. I was tempted to just tape it over but instead will be going into ARB this week for new ones

Next. Pull the standard air intake grill off. And there are a few screws that need to come out. Undo the aerial mount, this needs to be bent later on. Pull the first section of standard hose off. This will be replaced by the corrugated hose.

This is as far as I got today

Have to get hold of a template, new seal and corrugated hose.

I'll post up the rest of the story when I get them

    Hope this helps someone

What holds that black plastic air intake grill in place?

All the instructions I've seen just say "remove it".

Does it clip in or are there screws?

    Sorry should have mentioned that.

It has little clip things, I wasnt the first person to have a go at removing mine so they were all broken off and the vent had been glued back on with some sort of glue

So yes it does have little clips and is just a case of prying it off slowly

    Thanks

Well ... gave ARB a call today

Asked if they sold the parts I needed.

    The answer I got:

No they dont sell the gaskets "you need to buy the complete kit for that part"

Yes they do sell the pipe and template

"Oh thanks how much am I looking at?"

    Mr ARB man: " $110 "

Sheesh how can this be $90 for a piece of pipe and $20 for a piece of card board with some holes in it

So I said to the nice man, bugger that for a joke and that duct tape will do me

So I took JC's advice and just went a piece of cardboard for the template

Im still thinking about the gasket

Might have to try and find something or somewhere that will make me up one

I was slightly peeved at Safari Snorkels, fancy not selling a replacement gasket

Hi Jock , Might be cheaper to make one yourself out of gasket paper . might be also easier to make the gasket off the snorkel rather than the guard. can get gasket paper from repco and places like that .

    Well got it on today

Managed to find a rubber place, the fella was a nice bloke. Gave me a bit for free

Went looking for a new pipe. Went to all the hose places I could find, finally I found one with something similar; $55. No thanks

So did the silicone and duct tape jobby

BTW vnx205 on a closer look, those little plastic things that hold the standard vent on are the type where you push the middle out from the inside. If that makes sense similar to the ones on the plastic flares and on the door trim

Heres some pictures of the new seal. I worked out the other day that this doesnt really have to be waterproof. As it only prevents water or dust getting into the engine bay.

And my fix it job on the hose

One thing Im glad I did was drop into my local marine shop and replace all the nuts and washers with stainless, cost about $8 bucks. Well worth doing if you plan on taking it off again someday

Bit of a note, all the threads are metric

Where I left off last post

Old vent cleaned up and panel nice and clean, pilot holes in

Holes drilled out. Its says to 16mm in the instructions but I only went to 12mm

Holes in window frame drilled. Says to 3.5mm this is equivlant to bout a 9/64. Once they were drilled I ran the screws through each hole with the cordless drill so the "thread" would already be cut; making it easier to screw in by hand when mounting the snorkel

Screws and bolts in just loosely ready for full tightening once everything is in

Just before I fitted the snorkel I had a quick flick through the forum, with problems some people had. One was getting the nut closest to the firewall tight. I bought this a couple of years ago made it really easy

Finished product (almost - waiting on a stainless steel snorkel grill, the old one carked it in the accident)

    Any questions just fire away
