    Discovery TD5 Exhaust modification

Just thought i'd post up a little thread about what i did to my Disco last night when i got a little bit bored inbetween some other jobs i was doing on the car.

What i did was simply just take out the rear half of the exhaust system and cut out the rear muffler and replace it with a straight through piece of pipe (from an old d1 exhaust i had lying in the shed), this is a really easy modification to your exhaust that won't cost you much or even anything and makes your disco sound a bit tougher. It makes the turbo whistle alot louder and it just sounds a bit ballsier than it does with the muffler in but doesnt sound over the top ridiculous.

First up get your old exhaust for the source of pipe or buy some that is the same width as your current pipe (you wont need it flaired at the ends)

I used the longest piece of straight that i could find. I measured the length of the muffler in the disco that i was taking out and added 1cm each end, this gave me a rough length to cut.

Next step is to remove the rear half of the exhaust out of your disco and cut the rear muffler out as close as you can to the muffler its self on each end. The exhaust actually gets thinner each side of the muffler and if you cut close enough you can use the thiness for sliding the straight pipe over before you weld.

When i got to this stage, i put the whole lot back under the car but didnt bolt it in and just held it in place so i could ensure that the tip was straight out the back and marked it in the straight spot and then tacked it.

Welded... (not the tidiest but it doesnt matter under the car because noone can see it as long as it's strong!)

Then give it a coat of engine enamel for rust guarding (i used engine enamel over a usual rust guard paint because its better when it gets hot)

Then replace the exhaust in the original position and start it up and have a listen!

This is a video of mine, it doesn't really give it a whole lot of justice on the ballsyness sound but you can really hear the turbo whistle.

So you removed the centre muffler AND the resonator?

    Or just the rear resonator?

Sorry my bad, i have been calling the resonator a muffler, i just removed the resonator, didn't want it to be that over the top loud.

    Thanks for answering...

May I ask why you didnt go the other way?

Muffler out and Resonator in? The mufflers are so restrictive and the resonator is just a straight through.

Gives a performance increase (spooling time etc) and still legal...

Because i have a mate who has taken his centre one out and it didn't make a huge difference (mind you it is a defender, i think they have a cat converter as well?) where as i also have a friend who has taken off the rear half (the resinator half) and it sounded quite nice so i just thought i'd do that, plus it was just an alot easier job to do since i was only just fiddling about and wasnt really planning on doing it haha
