G'day Sam Ball

Compared to the 2.25 litre 4cylinder the 2.6 litre 6 is a DOG it is heavy, thirsty, burns exhaust valves, gutless, did I mention THIRSTY, and that's just for starters, the quality of steel in the Series 3's was of a lower grade than that used on earlier Series vehicles, the plastic dashboard does not like Australian sun/heat and cracks badly, also the firewall is more prone to stress cracks, all in all it is not good quality as the previous models.

Yes, as JohnE stated, I have owned my 2.25 litre 4cyl for about 16 years and it was my daily driver until 2 years ago, I have done about 200,000 + miles in it, and it will cruise @ 90kph happily and 100kph is WARP SPEED (the sound of valve bounce is deafening) but, I get a lot better than the 6 cyls 9-12 mpg at that speed

The Series 2a is a lot easier to maintain over a long period and cheaper as well, the Overhead Inlet Valve/Side Exhaust Vale design of the 6 cyl motor requires higher maintainance, parts for the 4 cylinder motor are more available as that motor was in production from 1958 until 1985 in the UK and in Australian vehicles 1958/1983 during that time

The simpler chassis design and stronger firewall, with the second horizontal dash plate give a lot better strength to the whole structure. all in all the series 2/2a was a far better vehicle and the 4 cylinder a better motor for Australian conditions, but, remember these Series vehicles are not a 100-125 kph vehicle as they are geared to low 4.7 to 1 ratio.

cheers

Speaking of my experience with S3 army ones, the build quality was pretty ordinary - items such as cracked chassis welds; dodgy head gaskets; and rusty door tops spring to mind (the Leyland years).

I would rather have a S2A any day!
Same here - and you can put a heater in them - I have (an original round one, but while they are now pretty rare, others can be fitted)

Thanks guys, as always a wealth of knowledge.

Think I might start looking at the S2a's.

In relation to the topic of prices, there are three ex mil's for sale in Victoria that I know of at the moment - S3 FFR in Blairgowrie $3,800, S3 GS Bendigo $3,500, and this S2a at Bulla for $3,500 - they're all too high, but I guess its a fairly narrow market, and a fairly select group of people looking to buy this type of vehicle. Eventually if they really want to sell, they'll have to take what the market is offering.

Thanks again

And eventually if you really want to buy, you'll have to give what the market is asking. That is the way the market works!

I don't know if these prices are high or low, but I'm interested to see how they go!

John

I've seen the car. The guy has had it and another Series for sale before on the side of the road coming from Sunbury into Bulla.

They were both there for MONTHS and then disappeared, now replaced by a 45 series Cruiser and a F series Ford tow truck for sale. Dunno where he finds these things but he's speculating with all of them.

It's got more than a little rust in it too.

Where abouts do you live could you fill in your location in your profile, so that we can possibly point you to vehicles that may be in your price range

cheers

Had a look at that IIa today - its actually a '69 seemed pretty complete except for the tool holders and canvas obviously, but seemed to have some tool holders mounted behind the front seats - is this normal?

As stated, all the bits seem to be there, but its pretty hammered - must have been painted 3 times at least - and seemed to be bubbling in the bottom of the doors - these are aluminum aren't they?

Tyres are new 'retreads', all in all pretty knackered, but is original and apparently a few people have been chasing specific bits - would you go to $2K?

Also, how many rear seats did the FFR's come with?

Sam it is normal for the tool brackets to be behind the seats on a FFR.

1. Not normal, but I seem to remember that some were like this - someone else will know.

2. Most Series army Landrovers are lucky to have been painted only three times! Door skins are aluminium, frames steel, and bimetallic corrosion is not unknown, although just plain rust in the frame is more common. Repairs are not particularly difficult or expensive, but a good point to bargain down the price. More important is the state of the firewall and chassis.

3. Depending on overall condition it may be worth $2000, but hard to tell without a good look at it. Maybe someone form here who is local can have a look.

4. Mine had two bench seats, but they are quickly detachable or fittable.

G'day All, AFIK the only military Land Rovers with the Pioneering Tools mounted behind the seats (as built to specs) on the bulkhead were the Series 2 FFW/FFT, as these units had ATU's mounted on the top of the guards cheers Dennis see attached pic of S2 FFW no pioneering tool brackets ..
PS and some modifications done in service i.e LRPV's where they carried their PSP on brackets mounted where the tools would normally be positioned.. Ambulances as used by ?? in Sth Vietnam had tool holders removed lhs guard to have an aerial mounted on the lhs..
