yep certainly is a rare car, especially with that very rare price tag. No tool holders rotten canvas, a couple of dents, and a 3 litre 6???

I agree John. I paid $400 for my GS in similar condition (and it had original motor).

True, but I saw a series 3 GS with a hard top in tidy condition, very original with all convoy lights etc sell here for $4500, and the owner said he had higher offers after he sold it. I think landie values might be having a bit of an increase.

Although everybody loves a bargain from the farmyard

Carsales confuses me

This is the second Land Rover advertisment in a row that states that the engine is - 6 cylinder dual fuel carburettor 3.0L (3000cc)

In the description further down the page it states that it still has the original motor - "Petrol motor original in running order"

I suspect that the seller has to choose a motor type when placing advertisment. I also suspect that there is not a suitable option for the 2.25ltr motor. A 3.0L is probably the closest.

G'day Folks

Well, my big magnifying glass tells me it has a 4 cylinder firewall, with the straighter gearlever, which denotes a syncro gearbox, headlights are in early position, so could be one of the last of that type, or could be one of the headlight in guard models which had the old front end fitted (on Military request) for overseas duty, SVN, this was done for parts commonality but as for 6 cylinder 2.25 would be my guess, dual fuel, where is the gas bottle and another $1000 for a canopy, and that makes an expensive vehicle even before you turn the key

cheers

Just wondering about the Series II - have only considered the Series III previously, just because they were newer and assumed less problems, but are there significant drawbacks with an earlier model if you are going to restore it anyway?
I do like the cutaway guards on those earlier ones - when did they stop?

The price is way too high - a 1980 in similar condition went on ebay recently - was outbid by PimpDiddy by $75 - went for $1,575 - ridiculous, should have just got it.

Agree with the engine spec.s - another one stated that they were forced to quote those figures - what are the old 2.25's like compared to the 2.6 litres?

1. I can't think of any. The lack of plastic on the dash is an advantage rather than a disadvantage. The gearbox is less likely to give trouble. The Series 2a electrics are (slightly) less reliable, but not enough to worry about - both are Lucas! The 2a probably has a Rover rear axle as opposed to the stronger salisbury (although apparently some were changed in service), but this is an easy change if you want to. The 2.25 has a generator not an alternator, but this is easily changed, again, if you want to. The brakes are single circuit, without assistance, and the front drums are narrower than late Series 3, but in good condition work well and are a lot easier and cheaper to work on than the dual circuit assisted brakes (which can be fitted if you really want to).

2. End of Series 2a Australian army Landrovers. They were only ever here and on the 2a.

3. 2.25 is superior in every respect compared to the 2.6 except for absolute power. Much more durable, far easier to get parts for, a bit better economy, more reliable - what more do you want? On the other hand, finding a six with the original engine is rare, because they have mostly been replaced with something else!

As far as price goes, it will be interesting to see what it goes for. It is in surprisingly original condition - for example, when I bought mine, the front exhaust had to be changed for registration in Victoria, and I am surprised that it was registered like that.

I guess the best way to check that car sales thing out is by advertsing something for sale with them.
Might be the place to put the batmobile.

If your looking for the difference in the 2.6 and the 2.5 mtrs in the service vehicles, here is the place to ask,
I can add this, when travelling in a pseudo convoy on a motorway and uncle ho is in the lead, you would be flat out keeping up with him and he has a 2.25. Surprisingly nimble motors.

You get a heater with the Series 3, which while not startling in performance, is better than not having one.

Speaking of my experience with S3 army ones, the build quality was pretty ordinary - items such as cracked chassis welds; dodgy head gaskets; and rusty door tops spring to mind (the Leyland years).

I would rather have a S2A any day!
