So - does anyone know the real reason for the front-exit exhaust. I have heard lots of stories, but not sure which one is true...

Also - anyone had problems getting one registered with that exhaust (bet you would in WA!).

I think this has been discussed before on the forum; two reasons I have heard;
1) On the FFR and workshops it avoids exposure to exhaust gases for the radio operators and RAEME techies when the vehicle is working in a stationary configuration;
2) In workshops to avoid contact between a hot exhaust and hydraulic fluids, oils etc which may be carried and spilled in the rear of these vehicles.

In addition to the front mounted exhaust, a flexible exhaust extension hose was also made to extend the exhaust exiting point further from the vehicle. These are still used on Perentie FFR's.

I had no problem getting my workshop registered in the ACT with the front mounted exhaust. I was asked the question if that was the original location for it so I pulled out the Army Repair Parts Scale which shows the front mounted muffler setup and they were happy.

As long as you can prove the exhaust is a factory fittament, it shouldn't be an issue, and we do have the documents to prove that.

Another reason for the front exhaiust is to make it easier to ensure on the FFR's that grass etc hadn't collected against the exhaust. Otherwise as they were often running stationary out bush for some time and getting hot, there was a good chance of starting a fire.

That is normally the case I agree, however I was made to relocate the exhaust on my 110 to get it registered in WA - even though the dpi inspector was aware it was the original exhaust.

sounds a bit bizzare!

Although for many years you were not allowed to register a LHD vehicle in many states as well. so go figure!
